Re: Air Conditioning Question
We're going to assume all the components are still under the hood, right? I would start w/ the compressor. Depending on how long it has not been charged w/ freon, you may need to replace the compressor. Any noise coming from the compressor? It may have just leaked out and need to be recharged. Can you legally do that in CA?

Re: Air Conditioning Question
1) Check to see if the electromagnetic clutch works. This is where the belt pulley is. With the air conditioner turned on you will see the back half of the pulley turning. Current makes the clutch squeeze the pulley and then the compressor turns. This could be a fuse if it dosn't work;
2) A low charge could be the problem. A service shop is needed here.
3) The condenser is freezing up/ Incorrect charge or other problem. Also it needs service in a shop.

Re: Air Conditioning Question
Like stated above, you need to check and see if the clutch on the compressor is locking in.
- Start the car with the ac off.
- Look at the compressor to see that the clutch is not turning.
- Turn the ac on, check again to see if the clutch is locked in and turning.
- Watch to see if the clutch cycles. (locks/unlocks)
- If the clutch is cycling too often, means system is low on refrigerant (R12 or 134A).
- If clutch will not lock in, system is too low for pressure switch to work.

Re: Air Conditioning Question
slap on a gauge pack & see what the charge is, that would be the first thing I would do. If the charge is okay, then I would check the control circuit to see if a demand was being made for conditioned air.
There is not a whole bunch of parts that go into creating an A/C system. Check out the charge first tho... a good place to start because stuff won't work right (low pressure cut out for example) if you have no or a low charge.
