Fan set-up

I ordered a Perma-Cool 19114 because I cant seem to get my cars temps under control. My radiator looks good, no leaks, my water pump is a new edelbrock one and I have a 180 degree thermostat.

Is it better to use the pema-cool fan as a pusher or a puller? I plan on just running that one fan, and if I need any more im going to either get another 14in fan or if I dont have room a 12in fan.

Also I have a hypertech fan switch, but im not sure where it goes. I see 2 things that look like it on the passenger side. Is it the bottom one[just above the oil pan] or is it the top one [just below the cyl head]?
Im also going to a 160 degree thermostat.

Re: Fan set-up

I would return the 19114 & install 2 of the recently released fans that have the same motors but have plastic fan blades connected on the ends with a plastic ring for your application. The CFM's they advertise are very nearly the same as the 19114 but you can squeeze 2 of them on and if you have "too many mods to list" which I assume are atleast in part power adds you will want 2 fans for sure. I sell these fans on the custom aluminum radiators I build for race & street applications and they are one of the best out there (including the 19114 & 19112). The fans will always work better as pullers. The only thing I do not like are the speedy nuts they use to hold on the fan blades. I remove these & thread the shaft w/fine threaded 5/16" threads & then loctitie the nut as there is not enough shaft to use any type of a lock washer. For the fan switch, it would be best to mount it into the intake manifold near the thermostat housing. If you are using your stock computer however, the one below the thermostat is the sensor for the computer. That leaves you with the one in the drivers side head I believe.

Re: Fan set-up

Alright thanks.
Do you know the part number for the fan you are referring too?
And im having these heat issues after changing the cam/heads/intake manifold so im getting them all squared away and getting my tune pretty good before I add my supercharger I have.

Ill put the fan switch below the cyl head then, thanks.

Re: Fan set-up

I don't remember the fan number off the top of my head but it's listed & illustrated in Summit. Let me know what your combo is for your engine & what blower & boost you are looking to run. I have been experimenting with procharger extensively on my car and have run into alot of things that might save you some greif, including with your drive train, fueling components, computer issues, belt slippage, etc............ (have had a p600b, a p1sc & f1 all on this car with my own inner cooler design and assembly including my own custom built radiator.

Re: Fan set-up

Ive got an older Whipple supercharger that was made for the 305/350TBI trucks.
Engine is 305TBI with Comp Cams XFI268 camshaft, 113 cyl heads, Edelbrock 3704 intake manifold. Also have a Aeromotive 13301/Walbro 255lph for fueling.

What size is the fan your referring too? 12in? Have any idea what series they are or anything? Summit has a lot of fans from Perma-Cool.

Re: Fan set-up

PRM 19008 12" fan. Still has very high CFM rating, still has good motor like the metal blade fans, your core should measure 26 1/2" left to right which should work for 2-12" fans.

http://perma-cool.com/Catalog/Cat_page16.html

It flows 1300cfm less then the 14in.
If I need more cooling then the 14in fan can provide. Ill see if I can squeeze a 12in in there, or a 10in.
Summit has the wrong cfm for a bunch of fans it looks like....

Re: Fan set-up

Yeah but which is better, 1600 cfm over 226 sq/inches or 2900 cfm over 153 sq/inches? That's what you need to figure on. It's interesting that gm went from 1 fan to 2 fans as the vehicle progressed. Maybe a 14" and a 12" offset would be best.

Yup, if I got with dual fans they should both be pullers?
And thanks for all the help

Either both as push or as pull. Preferably pull.

Re: Fan set-up

Finally put the 14in Permacool fan in. The old fan switch was.... near impossible to remove, the headers got in the way. I just wired the fan to run on key on. It runs cooler then it did with the stock one, but considering its winter time, im going to need a second one for sure before the weather warms up.
With the stock fan it would get to like 240 just from regular driving. Now its around 220, so its definitely better. Ill probably pony up the money and get a 12in fan, the 14in fan actually looks really small on my radiator and I still have tons of room, I might even have room for another 14in. When I add the second fan ill wire that one up to the fan switch though.

But thanks for the help guys.
