whats a good running temp?

As of right now i have a 165* stat installed and she seems to be running about 180* when driving....i noticed last night at the demos she started to run a lil higher (200*) when idling for 5-8 mins...is this normal?...i would like it to get the temp a little lower if possible whether its driving or idling...

right now my cooling setup is the stock 305 radiator with 1 working electric fan (hopefully soon 2 working fans)...the engine is a 360 (350 bored .060") with milled heads....

thanks for the help,
Chas

Re: whats a good running temp?

Sounds good to me. I like 180 for performance driving. When I'm stuck in traffic going nowhere, 200 is fine. Might as well get the benefit of better gas mileage from higher temps when you're just sitting there.....yet it's not too hot either.

Normal for it to run hotter at idle. No airflow other than the fan. Even with dual fans, it will warm up to the point where the 2nd fan turns on.

Re: whats a good running temp?

Do you have a 1 or 2 row radiator?
But really 200'F isn't bad.
My car has all ways run at 220'F for as long as I have had it.
Now that the radiator has intermitant weeping leaks, appears to be cloging and not holding very much pressure (car runs between 230'F and 240'F on some hot days now) it is time to replace and up grade.
