Radiator Fan not turning on
I have an 86 LG4 with a single electric radiator cooling fan. It usually turns on a little over 220 degrees. The other day (while idling) the temp got up to about 260 or more because the fan never turned on. I know the fan still works because i tested it on a 12 volt source. I know theres a fuse, and a relay, and a switch somewhere. Which one usually breaks first so i know where to start replacing. Is the sensor in the top of the manifold (where the radiator hose hooks on) the fan switch, or is that not it?
Also how can i make it turn on a little sooner so it keeps it around 180 not 220?

Fan switch should be in the pass side head - it's kind of a PITA - make sure the engine is cool before replacing, as there will be alot of coolant draining all over you!
I personally never had any luck with fan switches - I tried several, including a $100 Thermaster - even it lasted only about 60 days. I went with a seperate fan controller - it is adjustable and has a probe that sticks inbetween the fins on the radiator. It also has extra hook ups for wiring an always on and an override off switch in the cabin. Cost me about $90, but was well worth it to me - now my fan comes on at my set temp, and hasn't failed in 2 years. Best part - no showering in coolant to install, just leave the old dead fan switch in place and wire this in. They are available at any local auto parts store, I got mine (with more features) from Summit:

Re: Radiator Fan not turning on
wow thats neat. Im gonna check that out a little more.
I took off all my smog pump crap right before this happened. Do you think that that could have anything to do with it?

Re: Radiator Fan not turning on
ok so yesterday i had the car idling and it was up to about 220 and the fan turned on. I didn't reallize it until i turned it off and i heard the fan still spinning. I started the car again and let it idle and the fan wouldn't come back on?
