No fan with AC, no fan on wire jump, fan runs with 12v

After searching I haven't found a definitive answer to my problem. Out of no where this has happened.

No fan when getting hot. No fan when turning on AC. No fan when jumping the wires next to the relay, the fan motor DOES run with 12V. All fuses are good.

I'm about to jump the fan switch. If I ground it it will be permanently on?
If the fan switch doesn't do it what can I expect? What could the problem be?

Re: No fan with AC, no fan on wire jump, fan runs with 12v

Oh yeah, it's a single fan.

Also, i just ground the fan switch on the passenger side.
I heard the click of the relay, so i took the plug out and jumped the red and black, and tried to ground out the fan switch. It laughed at me, and by laughing I mean the fan didn't come on.

Is this the part where I yell and cuss and break out the wiring diagrams?

EDIT: Looking at the wiring diagrams it either has to be the relay or the fuseible link...?

Verify constant 12 volts to the fan relay, should be on larger guage wire. This wire has a fusible link that may be blown.

Next verify that 12 volt control voltage is coming to the relay with ignition in run.

Ground relay and verify 12 volt coming out on larger guage wire to fan motor.

If the relay's clicking it's probably working.

I grabbed an electrician I knew with his gear
IGNITION ON - No continuity between red and black on relay pad(no hooked to relay)

Found FUSIBLE LINK E - looks like someone had to play with it before.
Tomorrow I will be taking this off and looking for the fusible link under the tape

Re: No fan with AC, no fan on wire jump, fan runs with 12v

IF you still need help:

Relay has four wires connected. Color may be different, but it's easy to decipher.

Two larger guage wires, one is continuous 12 volt in thru fusible link, one is 12 volt out to fan when relay in energized.

Two smaller control voltage wires, one provides 12 volt with ignition on. The other is grounded to energize the relay. This grounded lead is the wire that runs to the temp switch in the pass side head (and A/C). The switch in the head will provide a path to ground thru the engine at a set temp.

A few minutes with a volt meter will tell you exactly where the problem is.

UPDATE:

Everyone who said Fusible link E is lieing, lol. I have the mechanics service manual from 1989 now. VIN E is link H, and I believe K(they are side by side, or looks like they run in continuance to each other. It's right under/next to the radiator cap. THIS IS FOR THE FAN!

E is for the lights, under the brake booster.

Re: No fan with AC, no fan on wire jump, fan runs with 12v

Update: Easily accessed fusible links have been changed to FUSED connections. Good stuff.

I have 12v showing on the fan power plug, but fan doesn't start while the relay is jumped and ignition is on, switching to AC.

Fan motor works when out of the shroud and everything, hooked straight up to battery.

All fuses checked again.

What is going on here? I'm getting continuity checks and everything, and it's all reading good...the fan is just dead. Could this be a possible intermittent problem to where when its off the shroud, and warm, and turned a certain way they fan works?

Check your ground wire from the fan motor and verify 12 volts to fan with relay grounded. You can also jump 12 volts to the fan positive lead with a set of jumper cables to test it while in the vehicle. It may just be old and crudded up and not strong enough to spin or binding somehow.

Re: No fan with AC, no fan on wire jump, fan runs with 12v

The relay wasn't hooked up, I was doing the manual jump across the harness end, unplugged from the relay. The fan motor is less than a year old, but worked when we hooked it up to a straight battery. The fan plug is getting 12V constantly, but it doesn't work...if it was a grounding problem or something like that the 12V wouldn't even make it to the plug that presses into the fan.

So, it must be the motor, regardless if it works outside of the fan shroud and everything. Keep in mind there is no friction, nothing holding it, it's not even getting hot or anything. It just refuses to move, even with a visually complete circuit. Even tho the plug that plugs directly into the fan is registering a solid 12V. But, lo and behold she spins well out of the car and hooked up to a battery.

Damn this thing, I need it fixed...Christmas is here and everything...I've traced both sides of the wires and this is killing me =P

I just don't understand why it wouldn't work like that...one minute it does, the next it doesn't, 12V or not.

*facepalm*

I'm about to wire a switch, or get an after market something or other....I'm just on a really tight budget so I would hope this would fix it.

There is always the tax return, when I throw the vortec 350 in =/

Fan motor plug has two connections. One 12 V and one to ground. Other than that I'm kinda confused as to what you've done.

Re: No fan with AC, no fan on wire jump, fan runs with 12v

I guess the most important information is that when the AC switch is on and the temp gets hot enough there is 12V on the fan power plug but the fan motor doesn't run. The fan motor does run whilst hooked up to the battery. I'm buying a new fan motor, I'll see what it does.
