I keep pulling my hair

I replaced the water pump, timing chain (switched to a high performance chain) and all of the gaskets involved to get the car started. I start the car up and the temp guage slowely moves up to where the thermostat should open. When the guage reaches the thermostat opening point the guage skyrockets to the red like the thermostat is not working. I replaced the thermostat about 3 months ago. Dont know what to do. Oh I drive a 1984 Z28 camaro 305 engine.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: I keep pulling my hair

sometimes you get a bad thermostat from the store. Try testing the thermo to see what temp it opens up at. Boil some water on the stove and use a household thermometer to check its temp once it opens up.

Re: I keep pulling my hair

Its crazy because I didnot have a cooling issue before I replaced the timing chain and water pump. I replaced the pump just because I had to take it off to replace the chain, so I decided to get a new water pump so I wouldnot have to do the pump later. My temp guage reads 240 and I shut the car off, I run over and touch the radiator and the lower/upper radiator hoses and none are warm. Its like there is no circulation due to a defective watwer pump or bad thermostat or it could be my temp guage is bad. Need help fast.

What really sucks is someone wrecked my brothers car about two days ago and he is using my other car for the time being, luckly I am off for a week thats why I am in a frantic state right now. I need to get this car running again.

Re: I keep pulling my hair

Two things come to my mind...you have your thermostat installed upside down (Seen it many times) or you bought a reverse flow waterpump, put your old water pump back on and see what happens!
