cooling fan run continuously from start up
Does anyone know what would cause my cooling fan to start running when the engine starts and stay on continuously?
I just did a swap to TPI and there was no provision in the harness for a temperature switch like the carbed set up had in the block. the TPI set up only has a CTS and I thought that would control the fan?
any suggestions?
thx
Jeff

One or two fans?
Is your A/C on? If so and you have 1 fan, it will never turn off. If you have two fans, at least one will never shut off. The other one will cycle on and off every so often.

You shouldent worry that it is on all the time, that is a bonus.
How did you hook the fan wiring up and did you disconect the switch in the passenger side head?

TPI cars have 2 fans. The above mentioned ac statement is correct. The wire that goes to the pass side head is also in the tpi harness, and is most likely grounded somehow if it did not do it before and ac isnt the issue. If its got a broken end and is grounded the fan will stay on when key is on. I would search down that wire first if you want it correct, then use any number of fixes for temp control mentioned by experts in this section, see sticky threads first.
I use a 170 T stat and a fan temp switch ( in the pass side head) that turn on fan at 189 instead of 220. I like the results.

Re: cooling fan run continuously from start up
my car was originally carburated. It is a 84 T/A with a single fan.
bout ten years ago I took the sensor out of the head all I have now is the sensor for the gage.
I bout a thermal switch that I am going to put in the block. Can I just connect the fan motor negative leg to that?
thx

No, too much current for that guage wire. Run it through the stock relay on the driver's side firewall.

Re: cooling fan run continuously from start up
From what everyone is saying about the electric fans and it being ok for them to run constantly,(talking about the single fan setups now), i dont agree. They were set up from the factory to go on at a designated temp that was read by the temp sensor in the block. the camaro cooling systems and electric fan systems arent the best, but the problem you will run into with the fan constantly running with the ignition on is your going to burn out the fan motor and then you wont have any fan, i know this because it happened to me and i almost overheated without realizing it. i would strongly suggest either setting up the fan so you can turn it on when you need it, set it up like it was from factory or get a pulley driven flex fan.

Re: cooling fan run continuously from start up
Did you go from having A/C to not having A/C? If so, then there are two wires you need to permanently join to turn the damn fan off, and they run up one of the A/C pipes to a switch. If not, then you need to trigger the relay with a temp-controlled switch (after ungrounding the stock wire, of course).
