compressor clutch removal

Search not bringing too much up....

I suspect bearings are going bad (smell, some rattling). Is this a repalceable item on an '89 L98?

You can change the clutch assembly on the A/C compressor.Clutch assembly will run you roughly $90 to $150.How well is the A/C system working otherwise? The reason I ask is it could be the compressor itslef making the noise(could be valve/piston slap in it).

Works well.

With the serpentine belt removed, the pulley spins rather well then binds a bit in one spot and continues to spin.
It's rather minor, though, by the feel of it. Who knows if this is amplified by the high speed of the belt?

I did manage to take it apart and there is oil seeping out of the race (is that the right word?)

If the oil seeping out of the clutch assembly itself? Some of the parts places sell just the bearings for the clutch.IMHO it would be better in the long run to replace the complete assembly,

I would say you need a new clutch.Or on some you can buy/replace just the bearings/seals.You have to weigh the cost and diffuculty on changing the whole assembly or just installing new bearings(if you can on yours).

The more I look, the more I'm leaning toward the likelihood of bearings.
We'll see...

Bearing or clutch replacement on ac compressor

What did you end up finding out? Was it possible to replace just the bearings and/or clutch?

Steps on doing this?

My ac compressor clutch is seizing up and I need to figure out what to do. I don't want to replace the entire compressor so that I can avoid having to evacuate and recharge the a/c system.

Thanks!
Rob

Found out nothing...
Removed the clutch, cleaned it up and re-installed.
I still hear rattling, but no binding I can see.
Yours is actually seizing?
