antifreeze smell through vents!

I took my car to the shop the other week because ever since i got it (about 5 months ago) its smelled like gas everynow and then and since i put antifreeze in it in october its been smelling like anti freeze. the mechanic said the leak is from the vapor (vapor something...i forget but i know u know what i mean) he said its no big deal but the antifreeze is. my heater core is cracked. he said the metal flake stuff should help. so i put it in but forgot to put on the heater when i did. so..it wasnt as strong as it was..the levels didnt go down..so i did it again the other day (last time was 3 weeks ago) with the heater on..no sign yet. BUT...the same day i put it in i was cleaning my car and found a puddle of antifreeze under the mat on the pass side! before i even took it to the shop it REALLY smelled like antifreeze and i havent noticed it since i put the stuff in..so im guessing it should be ok...do u guys have any experence with that stuff? do u know if it'll work? its just that i really dont have the money for the core right now and id like 2 try 2 advoid replacing it..thanx for your help

Save your carpet and antifreeze by replacing the heater core.

Mine was just $19.00 at Advance Auto Parts. You will have to drop the panel under the passenger side and remove the cover to the core. Remove the cover and then you can access the heater core. I think it has a few more 9/32 screws to remove and you can then take it out.

Pretty easy over all and you will be nice and toasty for the winter.

Jim.

I can't believe how easy it is to change a heater core on 3rd gen F-bodies.

I've done several 2nd-gen heater cores and it involves removing and disconnecting, HVAC and blend doors, glove boxes, defrost and air vents, fenders and the entire heater box! Putting it all back together is a whole lot of fun, especially on A/C equipped cars.

A 3rd gen all you have to do is remove the lower dash hush panel, a cover on the heater box, a couple bolts that hold the heater core in and its out! Anybody that is somewhat mechanically inclined should be able to do a heater core in 30 minutes.

like the man said up there heater core, 100% heater core, and if it goes bad again real fast, have your radiator tested for a dead spot, or cold spot, if it has a block it will blow out the heater core, had it happen on my dads zr2 s-10 like 3 times before i discovered it was the radiator
