who is going to find an answer to a probably simple "getting hot " question for me

I read lots of posts about coolling, I still cant figure out what my problem is due to ( i Have a92 rs 305 tbi)

first let me say that I want to fix this problem because I like my car so much since I got wheels and new paint for it, anywayy....

everything on my car is just fine BUT the engine temperature when I dont have the ac on and heavy traffic.

( it get form 25% to 50% really quickly once i do 5 minutes sitting in traffic, then get up to 65% and ONLY Then the fan kicks in
but most of the time I turn the A/C on, sorry i talked in % for the car temp but I dont remember the numbers I remember where it sits...)

also I can smell gas after getting out of the car and my oil breather little filter in the air box gets soack with gas ( black oily colour) after like two months

I got a new radiator, I got a performance ship from tbiships, I got 180 degree termostat, flushed coolling system
and my mechanics told my water pump was fine

somebody at autozone told me the gas smell problem,/soacked oil breather was due to a bad fuel pump

what do you think I could do to have my car not getting hot, I add that I have 97000 miles and that other that the car runs strong ( 100mph for 2hours strainght easy)

thank for your help here is a picture of the car too

Does your car still have the plastic air dam directly under the radiator? This is what it looks like off the car:

That's a classic sign of a bad PCV valve, not a bad fuel pump . Your PCV valve is located in the driver's side valve cover in between the front two valve cover bolts. To check it, start the car and remove the PCV valve from the valve cover with the vacuum hose attached and feel for vacuum, it should suck your finger up to it. Also, with the engine off, remove it and shake it and listen for a rattle. In any case, it would be wise just to replace it anyway, they cost less than $2 at any auto parts store.

50% would be about the 180° point, so the temps rising to there is about right. 65% would place it 220 +/-, which is about the temp (I forget the exact number) at which the fan switch kicks in. Doesn't sound like anything is out of the normal to me.

As for the gas smell, make sure your evap system is hooked up properly and whatnot.

To add to the PCV issue, the valve itself could be fine. PCV systems in general on all cars have a tendancy to clog with age due to build-up of hard deposits in the vaccum line and throttle body passages. So, if the PCV valve does fail its check, you should also check the vaccum line it's plugged into to make sure that it's even getting vaccum in the first place. If the vac line isn't getting vacuum, remove from the throttle body and check the port. If the port isn't getting vaccum, removal of the throttle body and use of a small screwdriver or other small scraping instrument to clean out the passage is reccomended.

To reduce the likelyhood of such clogging in the future, FI throttle body cleaner once every 6 months - 1 year in the PCV vac line will tend to keep the junk from building up too much.

Thanks for elaborating on the PCV system, TechSmurf.

Why buy one of those for $40, when you can buy the same thing for much cheaper?

GP Sorenson part numbers:
FS6 - Opens at 220*- Closes at 204* F- Retail: Around $20
FS4 - Opens at 227*- Closes at 211* F- Retail: Around $10
FS1 - Opens at 238*- Closes at 222* F- Retail: Around $10 (Factory TBI)
FS3 - Opens at 252*- Closes at 240* F- Retail: Around $10 (Factory TPI)

You should be able to get these at any auto parts store, and they all have the same threads so it will bolt right in to the stock location, but for the best deal:

609-106 - Opens at 200*- Closes at 185* F Retail: $13

I m not sure if I can check for all those thing, I m pretty retarded when it comes to use my hands and dipping them in the engine bay, I will try toughhh or tell my mech about it

concerning the fan switch, wihich one should I get considering that I have a 180 term, I read that it is best match to a fan switch that open at 200 and close at 180

thanks again,

anybody based in tucson or phoenix willing to help me doing those mods ?

I forgot to mention that sometimes when i take the gas cap off there lots of pressure, like its making sucking sound for a good 10 seconds while turning slowly

I dont know if that has to do with anything but I thought I would mention it just in case

by the way what do you guys think about going from 16 z28 wheels to 16inch chrome irocs, I know its off toppic but I post something about it and the guys over at detail/appearance thought I wouldnt look good on a black car , that I should better go with 18,
knowing that I can get the 16inch for 400 and that they will fit my tires compare to bying the 18 and new tires for 1400
what do you think ?

The hissing is normal. That's the fuel tank pressure being released.

As for the rims, it all is in what they look like.

Yep, for your car I would stick with that one.

Just like Stekman said, that's normal.

As for the rims, I would at least step up to 17"s. I'd just keep the tires you have on now until they wear out, then get new rims and tires, but that's just my opinion.

This is my favorite wheel, and will maybe one day get the 17 or 18 inch version for my car.
