fan problems

i found out why my radiator blew..the fan stopped working so that caused the engine to run real hot. i replaced the radiator, hoses, and fan motor. the fan still doesn't work. someone who had the car before rigged the fan up so where it would come on when you turned the key to the on position. what else should i check to get the fan working again?

yah, i'd try rewiring it.. also check to see if they wired any fuses into the wiring, that might have blown.

According to Chilton 91 305 models with a single fan were not ECM controlled. A fan switch located on the passenger side of the block turns on the fan relay. The fan switch has a single wire and will ground that wire through it's threads to the engine block. The switch when it grounds turns on the fan relay and will kick the fan on. The stock relays had a reliability problem thus many people hard wired the fans. The newest release of relays from GMSPO is a redesign and is electrically superior to earlier versions. They can be identified by(made in China) on the top of the relay. Sounds crazy, but they really are more reliable. Napa also has them under part# AR-279. You will have to figure the wiring and return it to stock but it is worth it. On the fan relay plug the two HEAVIER wires can be jumped to see if the fan itself is OK. You can also check for 12 volts on ONE of the heavy wires. One wire will have 12 volts all the time(key off). If it doesn't, suspect a fusible link.
