89 Convertible Ground Effects Removal

89 Convertible Ground Effects Removal
Can anyone help with removing the passenger side lower ground effect at the rear quarter panel on an 89 Convertible? I can see the nut that holds it on by looking down from the top past the convertible top frame but can't get in to take the nut off. On the Coupes there is an access hole to get to it. Thx! Jeff

Re: 89 Convertible Ground Effects Removal
You need to google IROC Ground effects removal for convertibles and you will find a post on this particular issue (from back in 03). Seems when ASC built/converted IROC's by moving panels/adding bracing that they did not take into account of removing the ground FX in the future. Seems as if you're going to need to drill a hole near where the seatbelt retractor sits and remove that to get to the nut that holds the ground FX in that area. I know when I get ready to paint my 88 IROC later this year I am going to need to do this as well-good luck to you!

Re: 89 Convertible Ground Effects Removal
Thanks Fivestar for your help! This helped tremendously. I was able to drill a hole 1" above and 1" to the rear of the bottom seat belt attachment bolt. I drilled a 1" hole with a step drill and was able to get a 1/4" socket in to get the bolt out. Getting it back on might be a little more difficult though but at least I got it off. I hope this helps when you get ready to remove yours.

Re: 89 Convertible Ground Effects Removal
Jeff,
Glad I could help. Here is another little trick I use when re-installing hard to access nuts or bolts... I use a very small amount of 'strip caulk' on the nut/bolt when re-installing so it 'sticks' a little to the wrench and won't drop to where I may not be able to reach. Good luck and post some pics when you are done.
