Convertible Boots - manual versus power
I had an '88 IROC convertible with a power boot. Now I have this '90 IROC convertible, got it about 2 months ago and the center switch on the console was not working (or I thought)
When I checked it out this last weekend, I looked at the boot latching assemblies and did not see and power solenoid assemblies anywhere.
Obviously a bit puzzled as I thought all the ASC conversions (the 6th digit in my VIN is a 3) came with power boots, not manual.
Anyone know what the deal is on these? Were some of the boots manual and some have the power solenoids?

Not entirely sure what you mean. My 88 has the central switch for releasing the tonneau cover. To open the trunk, I have to manually unlock it with the key at the rear even though it is a 'soft close'
Only on hard tops was there a central switch to open the boot/trunk as far as I'm aware.

Possibly, a previous owner removed inoperable solenoid assemblies and did not replace them leaving you with no electrical release for the "boot".

Re: Convertible Boots - manual versus power
My 92 has solenoids that "pop" the tonneau cover up as well. I can't imagine a conversion company expecting us to have to search for two small wire hoops next to a seat every time we wanted the top down. I suspect the previous owner got Cheap and just rigged something. I would bet he showed the vehicle with the top already down and then put it up for the potential buyer. Luckily the release solenoids are available through several people on this board ( private sellers )

Re: Convertible Boots - manual versus power
My 88 Iroc convertible only has a manual release, the button between the power window buttons does nothing when pushed. I have looked for any signs of an electrical release or selenoids but there is no indication of ever having anything but a manual release. I have owned the car nearly seven years and am the third owner (bought it from one of my brothers). I ma going to hit some junk yards to see if I can find and electrical release.
I will say that it is not much trouble to manually release the tonneau or the top... to be honest up until recently I did not even realize that some Irocs had an electrical release. I will look into it though as finding these electrical release units will be harder to find as time goes by...

Re: Convertible Boots - manual versus power
My '90 had the rear deck lid power hatch replaced and the power to the tonneau cover does not get to the solenoids, solenoids are good. I pulled the rear seat panels off and put 12v to each and theu work, also made sure I had 12v to the tonneau cover switch on the console, so it must be the safety switch you are talking about here that is keeping mine from working.

Re: Convertible Boots - manual versus power
I have taken off the side panels to re-cover them and again to change out the speakers and no solenoids. Just the mechanisms on each side to release the tonneau.
