Yes, another one...so we're building two 1992 Z28 convertibles at the same time. I just picked up a black Z28 vert tonight with red leather interior. The body has a fresh paint job but the ground effects, bumpers, and spoiler weren't painted yet so we're going to finish painting those. The seats need to be reupholstered and the interior put back together, and it needs a new top.
It's a prior salvage title car from a light front impact, the bumper is off the car right now so I saw the damage and it's very minor, I can't believe they gave it a salvage title actually. It's got 162,xxx on it but the body is in EXCELLENT shape, not a spot of rust on it. It's going to be a fixxer upper and then we'll sell it.
For those that didn't see my other thread, my dad and I are also building a rare purple haze/silver heritage '92 Z28 vert too
I can't stand the ugly stripes. Those won't be on there after it's repainted. It's getting the correct heritage edition red stripes and we're going to color match the '91 alloy wheels I have sitting at home.

Good luck with the project, that PS door may be an indicator that the car was hit a little harder than thought, but it also could just have been a rusty door. Either way it is good to see another vert being saved, keep us posted with pics.

Maybe, maybe not. What I do know is this 160,xxx mile car's doors open and close smoother than my 106,xxx mile car that has never been in an accident
I can't wait to get a photo shoot of all three together!

When I went to the Fbody Gathering at Bowling Green, KY back in 2006, there was a car identical to this one but it was a mint like 14,000 mile car or something rediculous. It was a trailer queen, very beautiful car.

Nothing like buying a project car and the guy says "I have all the parts", and they are not kidding that car is stuffed like a turkey. It will all be worth it in the end, I hate getting a car someone else took apart only because I am so **** about labeling everything, good luck with the car.

Great save, I like the original heritage stripes except I am going to put white stripes on my black 92 but the red looks great with red interior. I changed mine from black/grey to solid black interior. I went ahead and sprayed the entire insides with 3M rubberized undercoating while I had the interior gutted. I found some GTA lumbar seats that I used. GTAs had the best seats.

Re: Another convertible project: black/red Z03 Z28 heritage car
Thanks guys.
Today I'm going to change the oil in it and put a battery in it to see if I can get it to run. It sat disassembled and never started for the last 5 years, so I'm sure the oil has turned to goop by now. After I get it running back to normal, I'll start putting some interior parts back together and start sanding on the rest of the body parts that need to be painted.
Since we dropped off the purple and silver car to get painted in Kansas this weekend, I have some time to devote to this car.

Re: Another convertible project: black/red Z03 Z28 heritage car
Some small updates.
The new top is ordered, the door panels are being re-attached to the window sweeps, and the seats are being reupholstered next week (or at least will be started on next week).
The fuel pump is dead. But the engine sounds healthy, we put some carb cleaner in the intake and got it to run for a few seconds. When we went to do the fuel pump we noticed there was rust in the tank, so I'm using another tank from one of the cars I parted out, and will get a new pump this week to throw in it.
We got the fenders fitted on it, and in doing so noticed that the passenger fender is from a coupe so it didn't have the brackets like on a convertible fender. We used a little ingenuity to figure up something.

No wonder the fuel pump was shot. The whole inside of the tank was rusty just like the sending unit and floater. I'm putting a different tank in from one of my parts cars with a brand new pump and she'll be good to go.
I also picked up a good set of rear leather seats. The front seats are at the upholstery shop with the door panels getting redone.

I got the seats installed that I bought from a member here, along with the interior panels for the rear. It's starting to look like something. I can't wait to get the door panels and front seats back from the shop getting reupholstered.

The car now has new outter window sweeps which is a nice touch. I got some of the ground effects on this weekend as well as the plastic quarter panel caps. The rocker panel gfx are ready to go on. And the bumpers and hood are in primer ready to be sprayed. I'm deciding whether to spray the red stripes on or have a vinyl shop make a set for me...

Re: Another convertible project: black/red Z03 Z28 heritage car
I understand that, but I'm looking from a cost perspective as well. I'm going to be totally honest here, we're going to flip this thing shortly after it's done. My wife will drive it maybe a few weeks/months and then it's gone. So the more profit I get from it, the more money I have to put towards my blue car's paint job.
I'm not skimping out on things though, just trying not to spend on anything I don't need.

Change of plans: the stripes are getting painted on. The local vinyl shop wants $200 t make the stripes if we install them ourselves. I can get a quart of GM bright red base coat for $70.

Looking good so far..
It takes a bit to lay out the stripes on the hood to get them to look right.

My dad is a commercial/residential painter so he is used to taping things off and doing cool things like this. He and my late grandpa hand painted a bird on his 2nd gen T/A when he was in his 20's.

Here you go. We just finished laying down the rest of the stripes this past weekend. We'll be attaching the hood blisters, getting the tail lights working, and doing a tune-up on it soon. Then it's off to the upholstery shop for the new top and the door panels/front seats.

Re: Another convertible project: black/red Z03 Z28 heritage car
It's coming along pretty nicely. The interior isn't done yet, but the outside is mostly finished. The hood doesn't line up completely just yet, and it's missing the grill. Still needs a good buffing and the new convertible top.
It's got a bad misfire so we're going to track that down this week and hopefully get it running right before we drive it to the upholstery shop for the interior work to be done.
I ordered a set of red Z28 emblems from Hawks this week also so those will be here soon.

Nick that looks fantastic!!
You and your dad should open a paint shop. I've been wanting a z03 for a while now in the color combo above! I love it!
How did you get those skirts on and off the car??
Did you end up leaving them on?
Keep us posted man

They don't look as bad when the center caps are on. They look like a 16" Ronal R15.
I have the 25th Anniversary bade that goes on the left side, but the Z03 emblem pictured in your post is aftermarket for sure.

Re: Another convertible project: black/red Z03 Z28 heritage car
We had to put new injectors in the car this week because it was running like complete crap. Also had to fix a short in the coil. It runs really good now
I also got the new red '91-'92 Z28 emblems on it like it should have, and put a new dash emblem in because the previous owner painted the letters red on the "Z28" and it really didn't turn out very well.
It's scheduled to go to the upholstery shop next weekend for the top/seats/door panels.

Re: Another convertible project: black/red Z03 Z28 heritage car
I'm more a Firebird fanatic, but it's very, VERY good to see them all saved, as many as possible. Even though I love movies with car chases and explosions and crashes, we often lose some classic cars in that process as well as just driving abuse from regular owners, That's something along with Cash for Klunkers that weighs on my heart. The Auto Enthusiast knows, there's little chance to see those cars again, there's only so many ever made.
