Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

I just got my new carpet today ($100.77 from 1A). Before I start installing it, should I be putting down dynamat, or anything else? I'm under the impression that dynamat is just for noise suppression, and because it's a convertible I wouldn't think it would be much help, even with the top up.

Also, will it hurt the carpet to scotchguard it?

Basically, is there anything I should be doing in addition to pulling the old out and putting the new in? Thanks!

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

thanks for the order!

dynamat (and any similar deadener) will work 2-ways: 1. drown out road noise. anything picked up from wheels, debris, chassis vibrations, etc. granted you have a cloth top, but it does help a bit. 2. helps to insulate the vehicle. keep heat out from exhaust below, keep interior temps where you want them.

this does come at the price of additional weight, but its all about personal preference and the fine line of comfort vs. performance

personally, when i get around to doing my carpet, i will be putting down 1-2 layers for all the above reasons (along with keeping the stereo noises where they belong - inside the car!)

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

I earned some eBay bucks from when I got my headunit, and I had a gift card so getting the carpet ended up costing me half the price of what it would have cost used. I haven't opened it yet but from what I've seen on here I won't be disappointed.

That's pretty much what I thought, but I wanted to make sure before I put all the effort into installing it. I'll opt to not put anything down because the noise doesn't bother me at all, and my music always drowns it out anyways. The car is cool enough with the top down and A/C on if it's really hot out, and in the winter I'd like the extra heat coming in. Plus, I've already added enough extra weight as it is, and could use the money elsewhere.

Thanks!

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

just a little point to throw out there for ya - make sure to let the carpet sit out for a day or so unrolled before trying to throw it in the car. if not, the molded parts will not have enough time to regain their shape and its going to make installation a bear.

i also recommend using the old one as a template for making your trims and cuts - just take a little off at a time and test fit. its easier to take away more if you need to then it is to add it back

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

Yea, I'm planning on laying it out as soon as I get home. I have the day off tomorrow so it's perfect timing.

I did a little bit of trimming to my stock carpet and I was able to just use a razor blade to slice through it pretty easily. I've read that people had a hard time cutting their new carpet though...do you have any recommendation as to what the best tool would be for cutting it? I think I have an actual carpet cutter thing somewhere...

Oh, and what's your opinion on scotch guarding it?

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

a sharp razor or nice new pair of heavy duty scissors should be more than enough to get the job done. dull tools can make for a headache and painful day

scotchguard should be ok (didn't see anything in my vendor info saying otherwise) but make sure you test fit everything before making cuts or scotchguarding.

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

I got some 3M rubberized undercoating from Autozone when I had my vert tore apart and sealed up everything. I am sure I will at sometime get a little water in it from a rain storm or something and since the car had ZERO rust I wanted to keep it that way. A cheap insurance policy. You can spray it heavy in the cracks and seams and fill them up and never worry about rust again. I used four cans in the cabin area. I still need to get the underside done.

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

I plan to use both on my vert project. Eastwood's version of dynamite in the cabin and spray undercoating wherever else. Plan to spray the inside of the body panels, fenders, and trunk area. I stripped my car down yesterday and was surprised to find only some surface rust here and there and one small hole (1/4") rusted thru on pass side floor tunnel. Rust will be removed and treated before insulating

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

My interior is carpetless at the moment and I deadened it with this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/100-8...Q5fAccessories

As I write this, my brand new carpet is laying out in the driveway to remove the wrinkles as well as to let the Scotchguard dry. The scotchguard can in the photo was purchased because it is specifically for brand new carpet. The cans were about 10 bucks each at Home Depot and you'll need two cans.

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

I have dropmat (cheap sh*t) in mine and raptorliner in the wells... can't tell you how well it works yet

Please note that I only have this stuff everywhere because dropmant and fatmat is cheaper and comes with more then enough to do so. If your using dynomat, I would focus on the doors (inner+outer), trans tunnel and firewall... if there was any left over, then I would do the floor.

adding dropmat added over 80lbs to my car. you would get the same results spraying the entire underbody with bedliner (and the net weight of all the liner I used is only 6.6 lbs!)

ONLY $110 FOR CONVERTIBLE STYLE CARPET?!! dam that's cheap!! Guess I will be calling tony soon!

Used my grinder to get all the factory deadener from above the rear wells (WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS)

1st layer, took more then 7 hrs to properly apply and roll out all air bubbles

layer 2 and 3 patches cut (3 layers in some places)

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

i put chassis saver on both sides of the floor, inside and underside, and then put dynamat over it. now that i think of it, i wish i would of bought lizard skin instead ! imo. some of the chassis saver is actually chipping off !

how is the cargo area different?i have a black coupe carpet i may install today.btw i decided not to go with the por15 since i would have had to take the floor to bare metal.i just rust converted the rusty spots and will use truck bed liner on the painted metal.

Re: Any point in putting dynamat down in a 'vert?

Convertible trunk carpet is the same as the coupe, with additional cuts made to clear everything and the top pin strip stuck on.

I've got a layer of Raammat with a layer of their Ensolite foam on top. Makes a huge difference on the over all heat and noise. It's not quite as nice as a coupe as I can now hear every little gap around the top and the top is noisy. I'll be adding some ensolite foam between the top and headliner when I get a new top.

Also did the tonneau cover and trunk lid:
