Raised white letters or not?

OK guys, I currently have a 1990 IROC vert with black wall tires...I have been thinking of changing them to raised white letters when I get new rubber for the car. What do you guys think? I really like the classic look of the RWL, but I don't see it too much on 3rd gens...They are becoming classics in a few more years, I don't think it will look out of place...What do you guys think?

Re: Raised white letters or not?

The RWL tires look best on the cars with silver ground effects. Because of the sidewall size originally spec'd for the IROC's was a lower profile, the blackwall looked better. I do like RWL on certain vehicles, but not the IROC-Z. My 2006 Silverado has them because it adds to the look, but I have not seen an IROC-Z with RWL that looked good.

I just purchased new tires in October. I went with RWL BF Goodrich tires. I was unsure as to how they would look, but loved them once I saw them on the car.

Re: Raised white letters or not?

Raised white lettered tires were made to go on muscle cars. they look great. Go for it. For rims i'd go with the Outlaw 2s. They'd look gr8. This isn't my car, but is gr8 example of the Rim and RWL tire combo

what size wheels do you have? I think white letters dont look as good on wheels larger than 15"

I don't even think they make white letter tires for 16" rims, just 15".

They make them for 16s but only for 225/60s and thats way to narrow for a 16x8 rim IMO

Re: Raised white letters or not?

I also have a set of BF Goodrich RWLs. The lettering is small and looks good.

Other brands with giant lettering like "BIG ******* 100s" or similar don't look so good!

I like them on mine! They give it a period look that you don't see too much on newer cars.

Anyone have a photo of a convertible with RWL's on their factory 16 IROC wheels that they could post? I would appreciate it...

Re: Raised white letters or not?

I have RWL on my 68 and like them on 2nds Gens as well. I redid my 91/92 Z with a retro look. 69 Hugger Orange, White Stripes, Black & White Houndstooth interior. I contemplated RWL but felt it would be too much. I think these cars are eye catching enough, RWL is just a little too busy for my taste on these cars.

Re: Raised white letters or not?

I don't think I've ever seen an IROC with RWL. On a lower profile tire like a 50, there just isn't enough space on the black to fit the letters and not make them look cluttered.

If you really like the RWL look, I would suggest you find a good set of old school 15" Z28 wheels, and put RWL on them with 215/65/r15. If you don't like the Z28 wheels, there's lots of other 15" wheels out there to choose from

Thanks for your opinions. Since I don't have the decal on the side doors, I just thought it would look good and not too busy...Here is my other camaro with RWL, which I perfer...just wanted too "busy" it up a bit without looking stupid or out of place.

Re: Raised white letters or not?

imo thats why people use RWL tires on 3rd gens.
-
the 3rd gen was basically the middle transition period where the F-body was changing from a Muscle car to a Sports car. RWL Tires and 15" rims give it more of a muscle look, While Black walls, low profiles and larger rims lean more towards the sports car feel.

The Owners are always torn for 3rd gens in which category they should belong in so they adapt and mod the cars as such to which they believe it belongs That i've noticed.
-
I for one prefer Muscle over sport.

Admit it or not this is pretty much what it comes down to when people modify the looks of their 3rd Gens, Muscle or Sports, Depending on how they personally see how the car should look and perform as.

Re: Raised white letters or not?

I love the look of the Outlaws with the RWL tires on that black Iroc. This is sort of what I have in mind for my 92 RS. I think that the RWL always look good on third-gen Camaros and contribute to the muscle-car attitude.

Looks perfect on your beautiful 69. The side decal lettering was just what I meant. If you don't have that, then you may pull it off. One reason I went with blackwalls is that RWL is usually on tires with a speed rating of 124mph. As someone else put it- I want the sports car look, ie the impression the car is capable of more than 124.

This is what I think of when I see those..
http://www.aluminumtrailerwheels.net/
I never liked them for the pro street look either.
They looked very very very dated even when they were new.
I also dont like big aftermarket wheels or the cheap dated look of a lot of the aftermarket aluminum 14-15-16 inch wheels.
By big, i mean anything over 18s and they are pushing it, to me anyway.
The new cars with the 20s make them look cartoonish and made the lines on most of the cars out of wack.
I run 17s on 2 of my 3rdgens because of the 13" brakes.
I Will have 18s on my 70 formula to clear the 14" brakes.
I like the 69 w the RWLs on it 4sure !
I def dont want a anyone POed as this is just my and thats all.
Carry on

Re: Raised white letters or not?

I didn't vote for RWL, but I have to say that I love them on specific ones. Example, I have a 92 virt that I painted a metallic green, It certainly looks the part as a older muscle car because of the boxier body lines. Coupes have slightly different lines.

I love my Raised White Letters, My car pulls it off, many will not. As for a transition from muscle to sports car? Don't think so, these cars will never be considered sports cars in my opinion. Rear Wheel Drive, V8s, Extremely poor traffic weaving. I am producing a little more power in mine than most people and when I get on it, I will only do it in a straight line for lack of control and sports care like performance. I also own a 4th gen which I consider a muscle car and not a sports car, it is too heavy.
