For those thinking about SFC's

I needed to do some body work in the passenger side fender well so I jacked up one side of the car to remove the tire. I put the jack under the sway bar mount ( I know not the best place but I was sorta in a hurry)I noticed when the right tire was off the ground maybe an inch the left tire started coming off the ground also. This is with both doors open too. I knew SFC's stiffened up the chassis but this really fascinated me.

Thought you all might get a kick out the pic. As you can see the car is still fairly level.

Re: For those thinking about SFC's

Yes my *** is itchin for mine to show up so I can get them installed.

That sway mount isn't a bad place as the jack hooks it well n ya know it won't slip off easy, unlike the smooth bottom of the rear end center.

Dunno how much room there is but I might have to take an extra day and weld some jack cups onto my SFC when they show, so I can just slide it under and know its not gonna slide off and jack up the whole side at once.

The jack cups is a great idea. I wish I had thought of that. I paid extra for the powder coated ones,so I don't know if I could have talked myself into doing it anyway though. Grinding off some of it to weld them in sucked.
The rear end is a bad place to place the jack. You can see the clean scrape down the jack frame. Thats from the car slipping off the rearend the other day when I moved it around in the garage.

A little can of of Chassis Saver will fix things up, I did get bolt in one but they will be welded in too so they are gonna get grinded n e ways.

Just gonna be a little bit of work as I want the cups to work with a big or small portable hydro jacks and have em sort of lock in place, not even a hair of slip at full jack height.

Re: For those thinking about SFC's

Post up some picks when you do this. Maybe even in the suspension section. Others may have not thought of doing this either.

Re: For those thinking about SFC's

You should see my vert when I just jack up one corner. The window doesnt line up with the top, the top has waves through it going diagonal, I wouldnt even THINK about opening the doors like that, its awful.

What brand SFC's are those? Got any under-belly pics?

Are yours just bolted in's? Are the bolts tight? Problem with most bolt in is aftera while or lots of use, the bolt hole can enlongate. Why mine will be welded in too.

Only have the ASC factory one in it, and the one on the passenger side seperated from the front frame.

Re: For those thinking about SFC's

Sweet! I have SSM weld ins on my 87. They turn the flimsy pinch welds into solid frame rails. I use them for hoisting it on the lift. No problem.

The SFC's I used are UMI's. They went on really easy. Hardest part was getting the car high enough to get my big a$$ under it and not get burned up by weld spatter.
I tried to get some pics of them installed but I couldn't get the camera to focus in on them. To get far enough away you couldn't see them. I am going to try and take my camera with me when I eventually get the exhaust put on and it's on a lift.
I don't want anybody to get the wrong idea about these SFC's having miracle strenghthing power to stop flex completely. My car is currently gutted so no flex is easy right now.

If you go with the UMI style you will need to reattach the factory one good. I had to take a hammer and smack a couple of the factory rivets in a little. They fit that close.

Re: For those thinking about SFC's

Cool, I already have a new set of the UMI ones. I can imagine that they are very close to the ASC subframes. The thing is, my vert has been wrecked, I think, atleast twice. I assume that this subframe came loose as a result of the first wreck. I don't have a welder, and I don't know how to weld, but I want to learn. I am probably going to have somebody install them for me.

Re: For those thinking about SFC's

Being wrecked could be a problem, especially if the frame is bent a little or even the floor pan. My car has been hammered at some time in its life.I can tell where most of the radiator support has been replaced,a section of subframe from just behind the K-member along with half the inner fender. The k-member had been repaired but had some big gorilla welds on it. I replaced it.
Come to think of it, I had to hammer the passenger side floor pan up a little too. Didn't even notice it being out of whack until trying to put the sfc on.

Wow, maybe our cars were owned by the same idiot? lol.

My vert has welds where the core support was replaced as well.
