Light Bar

I was looking for some feedback and pics on aftermarket light bars for my '92 Z28. I don't want to cut anything up so I can turn it back to completely stock if I want to. I've only seen one but wasn't happy with the quality at all. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Light Bar

The only one I've ever seen was this one offered by Hawks Thirdgen Parts

I can't attest to it's quality.

Re: Light Bar

I think it more or less just sits there... nothing structural...

Re: Light Bar

It's purely cosmetic, not structural in any way. And the only one I know of is being sold by Hawk's, same one also sold by Classic. And if there are light bars being sold by other vendors, they're probably the same product too.

As for its "function" as a high brake light, it seems unnecessary to me. 'Verts already have a third brake light, so it seems pointless to add a fourth brake light. And when the top is up, that "function" will be rendered useless anyway.

The light bar is an attractive cosmetic piece, and its addition gives thirdgen 'verts a nice updated appearance, but it could've been made to serve a more useful purpose... 'Verts lack adequate interior lighting, not brake lights. So IMO, the bar should've been designed wth the light facing forward(or on the underside) with a clear lense, so its function could truly be useful (all the time) as an interior "dome" light.

Just my

Re: Light Bar

It's exactly what it's advertised to be, a light bar (also as posed by the author of this topic). I don't think anyone would think it's a roll bar. Especially for $499 and it just attaches to the front seat belt holes.

I like your idea of the additional interior lights. That would be a plus. Maybe even a sound bar for adding custom mid/high speakers at ear level. It's currently listed as unavailable, but those additional features might make more practicle.

I've seen them in use and the guy added a nice feature. A wind screen. This totally changed the wind in the front seats. You know, the forward blast of wind that makes your girlfriends hair blow in her face (note to guys . . . always carry a hair scrunchie in the console ).
It looks a lot like this . . .

Makes a huge difference.

Re: Light Bar

These are some really good ideas. I don't understand the lack of aftermarket for 3rd gens! There are a lot of these cars around so you'd assume it's a marketable niche.

Re: Light Bar

Here in lies the problem, there are still a lot of them out there, pieces and parts are readily available at junkyards etc... There are still a bunch pf parts still available through dealerships, although they are becoming more scarce... Like most things the aftermarket rinkie dink things like the light bar will probably not catch on as such, those things are usually for new cars, as people want to personalize them. Right now there is a push to restore and buy all original 3rd gens, so there is no demand for aftermarket specialty parts...

Talking to Hawks, it appears that the customized parts like special spoilers etc are not as a big of a seller as original looking parts.

If you want something, make it yourself and sell it, There is a chance you will get rich, or you may never reap the rewards... It takes Faith, and the hope that there are others out there that want the same thing that you do.

How about some pics? I've been thinking of something along that same line, but made from oval section tube.
