Introduction - Newbie

Hey all, just wanted to take a second and introduce myself. I just obtained a prestine 92 conv. RS Camaro automatic from my mother, which she has owned since 92. I still remember the day it came home.

Anyway, she is handing it over to me, and its in great condition, with only around 35,000 original miles, always garage kept. Its white, with red leather interior and a black convertible top.

There are a few things that need to be worked on. For one, the top needs some attention, as I am sure is expected for a car of its age. Also, I need to replace the carpet from where momma drove in high heels, and where the heater core leaked in. Paint looks great, with just the normal scrapes on the front from dang speed bumps and such.

Can yall give me an idea of best replacement tops and carpet sets. I will continue to read through the posts for answers, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Introduction - Newbie

From my readings, several different tops are available. Some are canvas, some arnt. One style has a true back glass, where others are still the clear plastic. I forget the different names.

Let us know which you prefure and someone will chime in with the name(s).

As for carpet... Are you wanting used, or new? I put what I think was ACC carpet in an old s10. Looked great and wasnt all that difficult to put in.

Anyway, welcome to TGO and the vert section.

Sounds nice. Check Ebay for both tops and carpet. I would strongly advise having a trim shop do the top install, and you will likely need some new top weatherstripping pieces, at least the rear bottom that meets the tonneau - this stuff is n NOT cheap. If you are going to do the carpet yourself you pretty much need to remove the whole interior, not really tricky but time consuming - console removal probably the toughest - your best friend will be a 92 Camaro shop manual - buy one. While carpet and interior is out make sure to check for any rust in floors, even if just surface, and take care of it while it is accessible. Second best friend when you have questions on how to do stuff is the search feature at top of these pages - use the advanced search to narrow your responses. I had a black 92 RS convert, now have a garnet red 92 Z28 convert with 49k miles. Just ha top replaced and 2 weekends ago pulled whole interior out. PM me if you have questions.

Re: Introduction - Newbie

I went and explored the car a little further last night. Seems to have a strong smell of gas from the back end, and when I started it and nailed the gas it seemed to smoke a bit. It could be from it just sitting for awhile. She says it also clicks when she turns it, but I know it needs to be aligned. Also has an exhaust leak, but it actually makes it sound good. I will be replacing the exhaust system needless to say, but hopefully it will be fine for now. Seems to be no rust anywhere on the car from where I looked. Cant wait to really tear into it and enjoy it. Thanks for the help already....

Re the gas smell, check the easiest first - is the seal on the gas cap still good? After all these years it is possible that it just gave up, if not sealing you will smell gas, and if tank is full you will get some gas spill out the top of filler neck. If that's not it good luck, I just do the easy stuff : )

Re: Introduction - Newbie

Are there any common known causes of over heating with these 305's. Momma said that in heavy traffic, it will overheat sometimes, but her mechanic wasnt sure why.

DUDE - I live in AZ - neither my 92 RS nor my 92 Z28 ever, ever overheated, even in 115 degrees with AC blasting - your mom needs a new mechanic.
