Re: (non factory) 3rd Gen Convertibles
Out of curiosity, what is the sequence number on the RH side of the dash. You gave the VIN, which is helpful. But being a 2.8, it should have a number on some sort of plaque or something on the dash. The Cars ordered through RPO codes did not get the sequence number, but those Camaros that were dealer special ordered through ASC.

vicman - We need the 6th digit from the VIN as well so we know if it was a "factory ASC convertible" vs a dealer-ordered ASC convertible? You will not have a passenger's side glovebox door number that John is requesting if the car has a sixth digit of "3". As John requests: If your sixth digit is a "2", then you should have a limited edition number on the RH side of the dash....what is that dash number?
Vehicle Identification Number Example: 1G1FP2184NL100000
First Digit Nation of Origin: 1=USA, 2=Canada
Second Digit Division: G=General Motors
Third Digit: 1=Chevrolet, 7=GM of Canada('83-'88)
Fourth & Fifth Digit Body Style: FP=Camaro Sport Coupe, FS=Firebird, FW=Trans Am
Six Digit: 2=Hatchback, 3=Convertible
Seventh Restraint Codes: 1=Manual Belts, 2 or 3=Manual w/ Driver Air Bag, 4=Auto Belts
Eigth Digit Engine: See Engine Codes Below
Ninth Digit is Check digit
Tenth Digit Year: H=87, J=88, K=89, L=90, M=91, N=92
Eleventh Digit Production Plant: N=Norwood,Ohio, L=Van Nuys
Last Six Digits increase by one with each car built at each plant

88CamaroConvert...
If your 6th digit of your VIN is a 2, then it would technically be a conversion, if it is a 3 then it is a convertible as ordered by the Dealer. Although they could be identical otherwise.
VIN 1G1FP31 = Convertible
VIN 1G1FP21 = Coupe

Now that's a good question. I am not sure how to tell you how to proceed.
What else can you tell us about the car? Most likely an IROC convertible but hard to tell if all the badging and VIN plate are gone.
Any one else have any ideas?

Is the console still there? (look for the RPO codes) Look around for anything that would help identify it that is still attached to the car, also send some pic's.
Anyone else here know some tell tale items on these (kinda like look for the dual fuel line on 1st gen's that only SS's had???)?

Re: (non factory) 3rd Gen Convertibles
Now the tricky part. According to GM, the 6th digit of the VIN should be a 3. I see in the picture of the console for the RPO's an "8" in the 6th digit location.
On the home page of this website, you can download and install an RPO decoder that will tell you what all the 3 digit codes are for the car that was built. Note here that the VIN code on that "might" not be for this car unless you find the last 5 digits stamped somewhere else on the car.
Weird to me.
Anyone else have any input on this?

Re: (non factory) 3rd Gen Convertibles
Z28's were not made in 1988 so its either a Iroc convertible or just a regular camaro convertible. The regular camaro convertibles could be ordered with the 305 5 speed or auto. I believe all 350 autos were Irocs.

There was no 350 IROC convertibles in 1988+ There was 4 made in 1987 as ASC conversions.

Some matrix3 and autoform info. I just did a GM archive vehicle invoice on my autoform and one of my matrix3 cars, and it showed nothing out of the ordinary just the cars getting delivered to the dealers as complete cars. Does this mean the dealers decided on which cars got converted. Also none of my cars started life as t top cars.

The dealer would order whatever trim level or option package cars the buyer wanted or they thought would interest a perspective buyer (from strippers to lux or sport models). Converting a T-top car would be more expensive, since they would be cutting off the extra-cost T-tops anyway. Sure...the T-top cars came with extra reinforcing, but the coach builder reinforced as needed for T-top or non-T-top cars.

They have most likely changed out your rear end. I have an 83 autoform camaro in white. The car was transformed at the dealer and they would have taken the back seats out. I can send u pics of mine if you need. I am still in restoration mode, I have been offered almost 12,000.00. Try Hagerty's for insurance though

X2. Its obviously had paint work done (hard paint line around decals) & $19.5k ? Im not trying to flame but even if it was showroom perfect i cant see paying that kind of loot for sonething thats not GM authorized. If it was, say a 1LE one off 'vert well then different story.

Help..I have a 1989 Iroc that was converted to a convertible by a company in New York called convertible concepts. Would like to have any info that is available. It is a manual top and has a glass rear deck. Thanks Bill

Re: (non factory) 3rd Gen Convertibles
I will dig thru my files but your conversion sounds very interesting. I have only ever found a few post-'87 f-body convertibles that were not ASC built. I would really like to see a few photos of the car to compare it to other conversions. That would include overall photos, trunk lid, top up, rear seat area with top up. Does it have a Convertible Concepts label or badge? Where? Feel free to send to my email at kcdesoto1 (at) hotmail (dot) com.

Re: (non factory) 3rd Gen Convertibles
Hi Bill,
You sent me those photos and I have yet to go thru everyphoto from my archive. Regardless…Iwould not be able to tell you how all the parts go together. You should dig thru the old posts in the convertibleforum and look for other members with similar cars.
Here is my assessment from previous comparisons I have made:
Buffalo Conversion Corp: Cannotdetermine, my photos are terrible of this one, but is in upstate New York!!
R. Straman Company:tiny trunk. Straman is the only company I have found still doingthis conversion after 1987, but located in SoCal.
Convertible Concepts/Auto Sunroof Inc: tiny trunk lid.
Hi-Line Customs: tinytrunk lid.
Coach Conversions: tinytrunk lid.
If you choose to send me photos like the ones I include here, then I can compare even further.

Re: (non factory) 3rd Gen Convertibles
The "Rule of thumb" I use is a convertible is worth about 1.5x to 2x what a similar coupe or T-top is worth. However being that it is not an ASC or Autoform that throws a wrench into things.
The Autoform and ASC bring the most, I think just because of the massive amount of cars actually made. The ASC is by far the easiest to get parts for (no convertible 3rd gen is "easy" but you can at least get weatherstrip seals, new tops, and some pieces and parts thru aftermarket)
The problem with most of the other aftermarket convertibles even the Autoform for that matter they are too difficult to really get the pieces and parts for to fix them if damaged, unless you make the parts yourself.
I would think it is not worth much more than a regular coupe.
But it is worth whatever someone is going to pay for it.

What a great find that would be for someone with one of those for parts...
