Re: newbie q's

They came stock in convertible. Run the numbers to find out if it is stock or custom. If it is stock all the stress points are covered. 4000.00 for a convertible is a good deal. What kind of engine?? Where you at if you don't buy it I might.

Re: newbie q's

Earlier models were conversions. Outside the factory, but factory authorized.

For 92 Camaros, they would have rolled off the assembly line as convertibles.

Eh? Not factual information at all. All were trucked to their respective ASC shop for conversion. As late as 1992 I'd see a parking lot full of coupes with a cardboard piece in place of the rear hatch waiting their turn at the City Of Industry ASC facility.

Re: newbie q's

I have had 2 92 converts, one RS and one Z28 - the 92s were indeed ASC converted but they benefit from improved factory assembly techniques compared to the pre-92 - they used the industrial bondings that were going to be used for the new body 93+ so come off the line with greater structural
rigidity.

There are a lot of parts that are convertible only, and many are not reproduced - here are a few, I would suggest you check carefully to make sure they are there becasue some are made from unobtanium: plastic molding covering interior side of front top bow, plastic windshield header molding, plastic A covers (windshield side uprights), rear seat side upholstery panels and trim piece along frame edges, rear seat back upper seat belt guides, rear seat lower seat belt trim cups on side panels, black plastic trim cups for upper part of front seat belts located at front edge of rear hard tonneau, hard tonneau cover and black vinyl/plastic piece on top of it, clear plastic body protector strip along tonneau where rear of top seats, trunk lid, all 3 pieces of teh rear spoiler - there are more but these are the ones I can think of right away. Also, check the condition of all rubber weather seals - the convertible stripping is all available but very expensive, I have been told door strips are narrower for converts and no one makes them so need to trim ones for a closed car. Some common issues, not restricted to converts: odometer/trip fails, speedo/tach read is off ( solution is to replace the whole thing), cracked interior plastic trim on console and switch pieces, cracked dash pads, vent controls (vacuum) that do not properly direct air flow. That said the price is definately right for what you are looking at.

As lonsal said, "Eh?".
Not a single 3rd gen F-body rolled off the assembly line as a convertible. They were ALL conversions done outside of Chevrolet/Pontiac factories by independant conversion companies. However, some conversions were offered as an option by Chevrolet/Pontiac as an option (factory authorised by a manufacturing agreement), while others were converted by individual car owners or dealers having the conversion done independantly from factory.

$4G's is cheap for an immaculate '92 convertible. If it's truly that impressive, you could almost double to triple that (be sure to get it appraised if you buy it).

Re: newbie q's

Thank you for all the new information on convertibles. I never knew they were made outside the actual plant. See and whoever said you can't teach a NECK new things!!

Re: newbie q's

You raise a good question. What is the average price for a 1991 - 1992 vert in "immaculate condition"? I thought finding one at $10,000 with 59,000 miles was good...
