I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

I took it up to this guy who works at Mid America Mustangs in St Charles. He's the highest recommended appraiser I've seen in my area and appraises lots of things from 1st gen Fbodies to Chevelles, fastback mustangs, you name it he's done it. Anyways, after an hour of talking and looking over my car, and after a $125 appraisal fee, I have paperwork to show a total appraised value of $12,000.

Tomorrow I get to change my insurance policy to classic insurance which means it's going to be WAYYYYY cheaper, but I can't drive it as much. That's ok though because this is exactly why I bought my truck.

Thats exactly what I plan to do once my car is finished. From the engine mods you see listed to the appearance work ive done that is not mentioned, new interior carpet, headliner, seats, door panels etc.. engine bay painted as well. and get my some insurance since I don't drive the car much anyways it will be sweet to have classic insurance.

Way to go. Getting the appraisel is the best thing you can do to ensure you don't get ripped off by the insurance industry that will give you almost nothing unless you can support your claims value.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

When you put a car under classic insurance, you have a limit to your mileage allowed to be driven per year.

I go through Grundy Insurance company for my car. It is a stated value policy and there are no mileage limits, even though I dont drive it much anyway. You may want to check them out.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

Insurance coverage costs are based on risk assessments.
Some insurance companies offer the break due to the fact that with an agreed limited amount mileage per year, the odds are greatly reduced that the car is going to be used as a daily driver going back and forth to work or trips to the store, etc. These are the type of miles where the greatest number of accidents occur.
Lower risky miles = lesser chance of accident = a break on the insurance premiums.

Yep. I've heard anywhere from 1,000-7,000 is the mileage limit on State Farm's policy. I'll know for sure today though when I call them. I'll tell you one thing though, if it's 1,000 miles a year I'm going to go somewhere else because that's not a lot at all. If I do stay with State Farm it will be between $20-40 per month.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

That is for full coverage. The reason it is going to be so low is because you can only drive it 5,000 per year (just found that out today). You take a lot of risk out of driving when you're limited to such a low amount of miles. But if you think about it, 5,000 miles is plenty for me because I store it in the garage from now until it gets warm which won't be till April or May. And even then I won't drive it in the rain, and won't drive it to work.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

I would try Hagerty Insurance, or some of the other classic car insurance companies.

One thing That I do is because I cannot drive my cars in the winter anyways in MI I take off all insurance except for storage insurance (Comprehensive or Comp) it covers Fire, theft, Glass breakage. To keep a car on Winter storage for an entire year is $100 to $150 per YEAR for insurance... BUT the Summer months come and when I put insruance on them it goes up to $700 to $900 per year per car... you average it out and its actually a little cheaper than if I were to get special insurance for the year.

What I really like is:
1) I am NOT limited to the number of miles and I have an appraised value of $15,000 on my vert and $25,000 on my Yellow car.
2) If money is tight I do not have to drive them and leave them on storage insurance...
3) at one point my wife was complaining about all of my cars & insurance and when I told her that basically to keep Comprehensive on all of my cars for an entire year costs a Total of $27.17 per month, it has never come up again...

John

I'm getting Hagerty insurance as soon as I turn 21 in March. The premium drops a whole lot when you're 21, and since they want all the money up front it's a lot easier to afford if I wait till then. The reason I don't put storage insurance on the Camaro is just in case something were to happen with the truck like it needed maintenence I would have something to drive.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

Shoot, yea now I'm going to have to switch to Hagerty in the spring. State Farm contacted the under writer and I only get to drive it 2,000 miles a year. That's crap. That's barely over 300 miles a month if I drive it May, June, July, August, and September, and October.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

I wonder if I should get my car appraised.
I am currently paying $63/month for full coverage with $0 deductable but my car is worth actual cash value to the insurance. It is hard to get a straight answer on what that acutally means, does it mean blue book or replacement value on the same car in the same condition since our cars usually sell for much more than book value.

I just went to grundy's website to get a quote, and with the minimum liability (100,000 and I dont even know what that is for) the quote was $100.

I pay $110 a month now, with decent coverage (middle of the road, not the best, but not state minimum) amd I am only 19 with the car in my name.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

The policy I agreed to today with 2,000 mile limit and fully covered at $12,000 is $100 for 6 months. Break that down and it's only $16.67 a month...fully covered. That's not bad. I just hate the 2,000 mile limit they put on it.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

Would I be able to get my car under a Classic car policy? I'm 19 and I was previously involved in an accident (total) with my previous camaro?

I only drive my car when I'm home from school (May-August) and at most I could never see putting more than like 3000-4000 miles a year on it. I would like to see what my car would appraise at, since when I totaled my White Heritage RS w/ 49k miles Liberty Mutual gave us over $12000 for it....so i Would want to get an agreed amount policy where I could get an agreed value of like at least $15k for my Z28.

So any ideas if I could get a classic policy w/ an agreed value?

What he said! Insurance fraud is a no-no. I don't want to screw up a perfect record, I've never been arrested for anything in my life and I sure don't want to start now.

You should have no problems getting one. Talk with your insurance company and see if they offer this type of coverage and if not there's plenty of them out there like Hagerty.

They might not come to my house to check it but they do have a way of checking up on the mileage every year. They explained that I would need proof of mileage at the end of each year, but I'm not worried about it cuz I'm not putting any miles on it till spring and then I'm going to switch to Hagerty.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

I would check with your insurance co for appraisers they accept. My State Farm agent gave me the name of a co. they use. I in turn called the State Farm Claim's Office to verify they would accept an appraisal from this co. and my car would be covered for the cash value if totaled, stolen, etc. My insurance premium did not change and I'm allowed 7500 mi year. Although at 27k mi, I'm avg only 1500 mi yr. I get a new one every 2-3 yrs, last one in 05 was $20k. Thus the appraisals have been going up and the mileage and condition is documented.

I wish we had that up in BC. We have collector insurance but it has to be your 2nd car, and has to be 25 years old. (or 15 but less than 1500 made and in 1991 it was like 1600 Z28 verts. Damn 92's)

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

I'd still get it appraised and then having your insurance company agree to cover the appraised value (ask them about the 19 or 19A clause ). You will not get what your ride is worth if you go by their book value.

As for unplugging your speedo. It would just your luck that as soon as you disconnect it that you'd have a major accident. Then either due to damage to the car or yourself, you can't get back to reconnect it before the insurance investigator sees it and you then get nothing (or worse) due to fraud. Yikes!
And then when your a free man again and you buy that sweet 3rd gen you've been dreaming about, you can't insure it (or it costs you a gazzillion $$$) due to your insurance fraud record!

3,205 Z28 convertibles in '91. I had the appraisor write that down on the sheet as well.

I thought Hagerty would not insure a vehicle if it was not built before 1986. I know that is why I went through Grundy.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

Typically thats true, But they do have special circumstances where they will. IE a Ferrari they will insure. If you push and prod hard enough you can get it done. I had a friend in 1991 get Hagerty for his 1989 S10, granted it had a custom Plexiglas Hot tub & special graphics... If you can prove that the car is special enough they will take your money.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

I'm appraised at $22,500 and I pay $323/year with a 3,000 mile limit. Works out great. I think the most I've gone in a year is 1800 miles. They've never checked the mileage.

I had a hell of a time getting collector insurance. Either the car was too new or listen to this excuse. They would tell me that because my primary vehicle is too old they couldn't insure the IROC. My primary is a '89 Buick Regal. They said it's too old which means when it's in the repair shop (apparently they think that happens often) I'd be more than likely use the IROC as primary. I said well the Buick never breaks down and the IROC has 17k miles on it. Does that sound like a vehicle that's used as primary? LOL! I rather walk than park the IROC in the lot at work.

I would have got a lot more, but the car is not perfect. It has it's blemishes (dings/few small areas of clear coat peeling/a few rock chips on the front bumper/etc) Plus it's the stock drivetrain with 100,000 miles on it. I think if I had a new motor in it and had new paint on it I could have got closer to $18,000 but I'm completely satisfied with $12,000 because that's what I paid for it 5 yrs and 78,000 miles ago.

They don't usually, and like okfoz said, they make exceptions. I have already had an insurance quote through Hagerty, insured at $13,000 (a price I myself set, so I could actually get it insured for more if I ask them), I had everything lined out and ready to go then I realized you have to pay up front and I didn't have the cash to do it. So I'm waiting till my 21st bday in March so it will be about half as expensive as it would have been if I took the policy right now. If you explain to them your car is unique they will insure it. I know someone who has a '96 truck insured with them because it's a custom truck.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

Bluezee, did they hassle you about your age? I know a lot of classic insurance companies don't like insuring people under 25 years old. At least that's the deal with my dad's classic insurance on our two Corvettes. They won't insure or cover anyone driving their vehicles under 25 years old. I plan on getting a C3 vette in the next couple years and I'll probably be like 23 when I get it. Some insight would be great.

I didn't have any problems getting the policy with State Farm or getting the quote with Hagerty because of my age. I told them up front I'm 20 years old, and they still allowed me to have the policy. I have a perfect driving record with zero accidents and zero tickets. The only thing that anyone said to me about my age was the appraiser because he couldn't believe someone my age would have a 3rd gen like this. I just kind of shrugged and told him I've had 2 jobs at one time ever since I was 16 and I'm also a full time student, my days are always busy.

Re: I had my Z28 appraised tonight.

did you have to show proof for all the time/money/work/parts you put into your car when you had it appraised? I have probably ten thousand in the drivetrain of my old rusty 87, but i'm not too sure where some of the receipts are if i wanted to do something like this down the road, and after some bodywork/paint of course!

awesome vert like always!

Nope, all I brought was myself and my Camaro. I didn't show him any receipts because I told him the drivetrain was stock and the rest of the car was pretty obvious what was modded and what was stock, for instance the non-factory convertible top, the LS1 10 bolt, the wheels, the gobs and gobs of money I dumped into the sound system, etc. The guy even took my word on the production numbers on the car and what I paid for it, probably because I bought it from a reputable Chevy dealership in town and he could probably go look it up with them if he wanted to.

Thanks for the info. Yea, I don't have any accidents or ticket's either, and I don't have anything else to hide. My dad insures the Vettes with American Classic Insurance and they are apparently pretty strict with their policies. My friend also works for Grundy and she said you have to be at least 25 to insure a vehicle with them. I guess I'll just have to look around.

Wait till you're in your 30's ... then you'll be paying $40-$60 per month.

That's on a regular full coverage policy eh? I wonder if that means by the time I'm 30 yrs old my $16 per month will be like $5 a month.

Hagerty insures cars all over the country. Give em' a call, I bet you could get both of your cars insured with them.

He probably ordered special ones from the DMV? I know I get different insurance cards, but I think if I want to get cool plates I have to pay the Missouri DMV like $40 or whatever it is for the classic car plates.
