91-92 RS vs. Z28
looking to get a convertible. i realize the numbers aren't in favor but i'm wondering if it's worth holding out for a z28 over an rs even if it means paying more? i want something that i don't have to build for a little while.
are the convertible models as different as say the coupes in options?
this is one i'm looking at, i called and the mileage is wrong in the ad, it's actually 119,000 miles but looks to be clean. i need to find someone down there to take pictures though as the owner claims not to have a digital camera. unfortunately i know nothing about the convertibles so i'm not sure if i should check it out or wait.

also is the suspension and steering as different between the two models? i don't care how much power it has but it would be nice to have it ride somewhat decent without having to change things... assuming the factory pieces were in good shape of course.

Personally, I don't see too much difference between the Z28 and RS convertibles, since convertibles did not come with 350's (which would be a big difference in a coupe). The options are all pretty much the same as a coupe, the big difference being that convertibles have a LOT of chassis flex since there is no solid roof. ASC did add a boxed steel section along the pinch rail to try and alleviate the problem, but IMO it was like putting a band-aid on a wound that requires several stiches. Aftermarket SFC's are a MUST if you are going to even consider driving the car beyond the grocery store.
Lon (lonsal on this board) sells convertible specific SFC's through his company TDS (link at the top of the page), as does Spohn Performance (link also at the top). Any other SFC's require modification to fit correctly on a convertible. I have the TDS SFC's on my convertible, but it still isn't stiff enough for me. I will be adding the Spohn SFC's in the near future, and since they are different types of SFC, both can be run simultaneously.
119,000 isn't too bad for a car that is almost 15 years old... make sure that convertible specific parts and accessories are on the car and not broken, as many of them are getting next to impossible (if not impossible) to find (convertible specific interior trim pieces, spoilers, top frame trim and hardware, etc.). Let us know what you ultimately decide to do!

Emblems, blisters on the hood, and a TPI. That's really the only difference. Many of the Z28 convertibles also have the same F41 suspension as the V8 RS's.
Your average thirdgen convertible isn't exactly a road rocket regardless of engine/transmission combo. Buy the nicest one you can find, but don't rule out the RS because it has less performance, because really when you get down to it the Z28 convertibles aren't very different.
