Hardtop to vert?

I see they started with a t-top car for the conversions, I have a parts car outside the shop with a t-top roof that I was most likely going to put on my formula, but, I'd much rather a vert. Anyone ever done a conversion and any idea where I could find some of the parts required? I realize chassis strengthening will be required but that's not a big deal for me to do and I was planning on adding some structural bracing to the uderside regardless. Is the only way to find parts to buy a wrecked car or is there a source to find them from? Just wondering and researching...

This topic has beeen covered in here before and the general consensus was , just buy a convertible. Honestly by the time you track down everything your gonna need to do the conversion you're probably going to spend what a decent convertible is gonna cost you. So why bother doing the conversion? Its up to you but these cars were pretty low production and I would assume finding wrecked ones is not an easy task. Finding the parts separately will be very difficult. In the end your car will not be a factory convertible and ultimately not even an authorized conversion by any of the known conversion facilities so getting a good dollar value for it might be difficult. Just my .02 cents

all you need is a sawzall ;)

Looks like you got a fabrication shop. Well, maybe this would be a project for you but I still agree with Zedder. The payoff for a project like that might not be all that.

If you decide to do it, I would request full, photographic documentation. :-)

been there done that.....

Do a search on my username..

I took my 92Z and a Totaled 91 RS vert. 1+1= a T top Z now converted to a mini tubbed vert.

here a quick tossed together page for a example.

http://www.cecoatings.com/DropTopZ.html

You want more specific pic's let me know what you need.

http://www.cecoatings.com/images/Car...s/DSC01122.JPG

Here you can see the vert in the garage beein striped

Here Im still moding the size vert caps that hide the seam of the vert conversion. So my 91-92 Wing fits.

If you have a sawzaw or Plasma cuter like I did. and You can weld I say go for it. If you can find everything needed.

I scored the complete vert, leather Int. in MINT condition for under $700. So for me being able to fab it all up. It was well worth it.

My Z already had a complete suspention setup. SFC's LCA,STB,Springs,Shocks, Etc..

I am glad to see I am not the only one with too much time on my hands, I have done a T- Top to convert conversion I bought an 88' IROC convert for $500 that was totaled in the front and piece by piece disassembled restored then converted my 87' IROC it is exactly the same as ASC did it just awaiting paint. I can say once is enough.

I have most of it on video instead of pictures, I used every part from the 88' I had to cut my fenders, table saw the rocker mouldings because the 88's were junk and so on. I did some improvements while I was at it like access holes for the rocker moulding rear studs and the rear trough water drain hoses now come out in rear wheel housings I didn't want water draining into the inner rocker panels. What made it more fun was I did it in a tight rented garage that did not have any power I used a generator and portable welder.

TPI383, I like how you kept the tall spoiler on your car, looks so much better IMHO. Nice to see this has been done before and that I'm not totally out of my tree. I also located a whole car that's been wrecked in the front, just need to sort out how to ship a non-running, non steering, non rolling car from texas to mass at a reasonable cost and I'll most likely do this myself... Unless of course anyone knows of a complete, wrecked vert more locally, I'm all for it

You asked if I had anymore pics that got me thinking so I took some today the one I posted was 5 yrs old. I mentioned I did some extra mods some of those are 1-1/2" X 1-1/2" X 1/4" thk angle 304 Stainless steel reinforcements to the bottom of the ASC rocker panel reinforcements. I also have pics showing the modified hose drains comming out in the rear wheel housing. Many of the car designs from several manufacturers drained water into the rocker panel I really dislike that is causes rust, the 3rd gens got away from that but ASC didn't get it. I am planning on building a garage/barn later this summer maybe next winter I will finish up with the paint? I took over a dozen pics today but have not been able to post more than 1 if you would like to see more just ask and where to send or how do you post more than 1?

Thanks for asking.

Well, hey,
Make that video avail for $15 a copy and recoup your losses. Sounds way-cool, as they say
I think the key is finding your donor then eh?
My hats off to your visionaries who do it for yourself FIRST and not to get some bucks when selling down the line.
No one would argue that that's a great thing, but REAL custom cars are in short supply as I see it, even as factory mods

Fast Tony:

For your pics, try resizing them with the software that should be with your camera, or equivelent. Make sure they fit in a standard page. I had to scroll left and right to read! hehe

-Or email the pics to me for editing, I can do 'em when I have them saved to my HDD

I was surprised the post went through I was emailed it didn't go because the attached file was too big, I put the pics on my yahoo photo album today I will send them to chris maybe he can get them on for me. I did the job 5 + years ago originally just wanted the convert reinforcements adden to the T Top car for strength but I really like the top style so out came the can opener. The video is in my collection somewhere I will double check to see how much of the convert conversion made it on the tape? I also did a detailed restoration on the whole car includong stripped the entire underside floor and painted it with urethane paint, even though the car has only 50K the paint underneath was getting old. I don't go to many shows or do my work for show purposes I just like detailed really clean cars all around. I have owned the car since 91' but not used it yet back burner project. My 85' IROC is my pride and joy detailed over restorred and built beyond
my dreams. Thanks guys I look forward to this site like my monthly Super Chevy Magazine.

I have plenty, what would you like to see? It's a factory 83 z fiberglass hood with an 82, ahem, mustang gt, ahem, hood scoop. The things you do in an emergency when you realize the new setup doesn't clear the hood.....

All I did was cut a hole in the middle of the hood for the air cleaner, take a few measurements to center the scoop, drill the holes for the factory studs, and bolt it down. Quick easy and painless. The hard part is finding a good scoop as they only came on 79 pace cars or 82 GT's
