a power loss at high rpms could it be the carb?

when im driving in 2nd gear i will take the engine all the way to 4500rpms then it will just cut out on me like it doesn't want to go any higher and gives out. the engine is a 350. does this sound like the carb is giving out or what other problems could it be?
thanx

In general problems like that aren't the carb. Either timing, valve float, or inadequate fuel delivery (pump).

It would probably be helpful if you went into more detail than "It's a 350" and what you mean by "give out"

when i say give out i mean i will go into second gear and mash it and take it up to 4500rpms and then like it wouldn't go to 5000rpms it just like cuts off or something it loses power and i have to shift i can't go to 5000rpms like i want to. it never used to do this b 4. i just took it out of storge it has been sitting like 9 months is it possible it could be the gas. it just doesn't want to keep on climbing the rpm range it is fine till i get to like 4-45k then it just like stops climbing any ideas?

If the gas is 9 months old..yeah that would definatly be a good place to start. As would new a fuel filter. and oil/oil filter...just in case you havn;t yet.

Ya, that sounds like the fuel filter is restricting the flow. I used to have the same prob. I replaced the filters with a cleanable screen type and a regular one for the smaller particles.

would the filter be getting clogged and just making less gas get through. would that stop the flow of gas because it is clogged and not give the sufficent amount of gas to keep on going through the higer rpm range?

absolutely. it could be supplying enough gas for lower rpms, but chocking off the supply at high rpms.

If you're talking about the stock q-jet, any parts store will have an in-carb filter that will work fine. A couple of bucks or so.

Maybe your secondaries are "stuck" closed, if they are vac operated? and/or secondary fuel system is (partially) clogged from fuel varnish?

Not to long ago I had the same problem on my Nova. It turned out that the fuel pressure needed to be adjusted. It was set at 4 so I moved it up a little and the problem went away. Sounds like fuel delivery problem.

Sounds like fuel pressure or fuel filter most likely. Another option could be the ignition system isn't keeping up with the car at that high of rpm's, and there isn't enough spark to ignite that much gas at WOT. I also doubt it is the carb. I have a Q-Jet and am pushing 400+ HP right now with minimal problems. It is slightly modified on the secondary side though.
