I have a 383 stroker and am having a hard time getting my carb tuned just right. The problems are:

Intermitent bad hesitation on acceleration (not as bad as before, I put silver step up springs in)

White-ish smoke on HEAVY acceleration.

I'll be going 40 mph and romp on it and it seems like it just loads up and goes nowhere- picks up almost no speed.

Timing is at 11*BTDC, new plugs, wires and 3 month old MSD pro billet distributor with 6A box. Don't seem like it's ignition related.

Any advice is appreciated.

Sounds like it could be fuel pump/regulator related. What jets are you using?

2 stages lean?!? That sounds pretty big to me, even for a 383. I would check your fuel pump. Your sig. says it's stock, is that still the case? If so, it might be a good time to upgrade.

I believe that's where I'm headed. Not really one of those things I wanted to replace, but I guess like all things it's time has or will come and I might as well get it overwith. One thing I don't understand is the possible lack of fuel pump flow versus the jets being too big. If jets are too big causing the problem, that would mean that the fuel pump is flowing fine.

If I have my timing at 12* BTDC, it knocks, so I set it at 10 and it does ok. 10*BTDC is the limit (should burn all the fuel going into the cylinders, right?).

Plugs were very dark when I changed them indicating a rich condition.

Seems like with the timing set at a point right before it knocks, the plugs would be cleaner. AND, if I lean the carb out more, I think I will have to retard the timing again to keep it from knocking. Am I wrong? I will be so happy when I get this figured out.

Check your accelerater pump linkage and try moving it if you have an off idle stumble. In my 383 I have 113 primary and 116 secondary jets. E-mail if you need more help. Good luck!!
