INLINE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP INTANK SETUP

INLINE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP INTANK SETUP
Can someone describe a proper intank setup for an external inline electric fuel pump? Ive already extracted my stock intank pump and connected a fuel hose from fuel tube to bottom of tank but my electric pump isnt sucking fuel. Any recommendations on how long intank fuel hose should be?

Re: INLINE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP INTANK SETUP
Your best bet would have been to leave the in tank pump and get a fuel pressure regulator to bring the pressure down for a carb. As it stands, you will need to get a fuel sending unit for a carbureted engine. You can't just add a fuel line to the end of the sending unit like that. If I were you, I would seriously consider going back to the in tank pump and regulate it.

thnx bud. I tried using a new carter intank pump but my fuel pressure regulator wasn't able to bring the psi down. my fuel pressure gauge was skyrocketing. I had fuel going into my oil tank. so ive changed out the oil and spark plugs again and im now trying to go w a lower psi pump which is why im using the inline. how does everyone else utilize their inline pumps?

My regulator is a Holley as well, btw, has no problems bringing the psi down.

No, actually it's still sitting in the tank....just unhooked (one of these winters I'll drop the tank and actually take it out, should have done it the first time). It's actually functioning as my sump line and has for as long as the car has been running, because my pump is sucking fuel through the dead pump.
No worries, a sump line is simply a line (rubber fuel hose) that's opening (where the fuel comes in) is at the lowest point in the tank. That, combined with the pump being mounted as low as possible on the tank makes for a good combo.

My goal, is eventually to take out the old pump and just put a section of hose in it's place.

These tanks will gravity feed if your pump is below the bottom of the tank. I know because I had an unnerving moment changing the tpi filter on my car.
If you won't get a sender for a carbureted car, at least splice in some metal fuel line. Measure from the top of the tank to just above the bottom of it, about an inch. Then add whatever length you need to the sender to make it the first measurement. Just a bad idea to run no filter sock in the tank. You will pick up lots of crud and dobb your fuel system up.

What external pump do you have? I bought a $50 mr gasket one for my sons car and it wouldn't work for crap..we took it off and put a Holley in it's place and no issues..
I have a question for you guys running the intank pump too..I am considering doing this on my 91 rs..it was a tbi motor so doesn't have the high pressure pump like the tpi cars have..will the Holley regulator that is rated for 4 1/2-9 psi hold up?what regulator are you guys using if not.

Re: INLINE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP INTANK SETUP
this is exactly what ive done already. however I cant get my inline pump to suck out the fuel from in the tank. I had removed the intank pump because I was told that itll stress out the inline to pull from an inoperational intank pump.
how long do u estimate the hose to be intank when u finally remove your intank pump?

I'm honestly having a hard time remembering what my set-up looks like(it's been in there so long). I'd have to look at it to let you know about hose length, to estimate it at least. I'll try and remember to do that tonight while I'm tinkering.
I know it's not ideal to pull through the dead pump, but it is possible. What kind of pump are you trying to use?

Re: INLINE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP INTANK SETUP
Im from the pacific so we dont have alot of performance series components unless we order them online which i just did. Currently i have a facet box type electric inline pump 4psi max. Have a holley regulator to a edelbrock 1406 carb. Brand new card. I know its not an ideal setup but thats all the shops out here had at the moment.

Joetag so it wouldnt be enough to even start up? Im just wondering why the pump isnt sucking gas. I pulled the fuel hoses and theyre dry leading me to believe the pump just isnt sucking.
