no fuel from tank
I am having a problem trying to get fuel from the gas tank in my camaro. i have the supply and return lines hooked up to my mechanical pump, and its simply not coming up the supply line. i can pump from a gas can without issue, but if i hook the line back up to the gas tank i get nothing out. A couple weeks ago in order to solve the same issue, i removed a check valve of some sort that hangs out of the gas tank towards the rear driver side of the car and plugged the line, it didnt change anything. the car used to run off the tank then one day it just... stopped, for lack of better explanation. Any ideas? its an 82 original mech fuel pump car, so there is no pump in the tank. i have no idea what is blocking it. I even blew compressed air back up the supply to the tank and all i got was a pressure build up and the air came back out the line.

Could also have a broken fuel line, most likely the rubber line, somewhere and the pump is just sucking air instead of fuel.
I would first check the rubber fuel lines for crack, leaks or rips.
Then disconnect the supply line by the tank and with extreemly low air pressure see if you can blow through the line to the tank. If it's plugged you don't want to blow out that mess into you tank.
Disconnect the supply line to your mechanical fuel pump and blow air through this line and see if you have any leaks or if its plugged.
These few things are a lot easier to check out than dropping your fuel tank. I have seen more problems with fuel lines than with the pick up screens.

One possibility for clearing a clogged pickup sock is to take the gas cap off, and blow compressed air into the supply line. At best a temporary thing if it works. Look for wet spots on the line after doing this - might find the problem if it's a cracked or rotted supply line.

Re: no fuel from tank
i blew down the supply line and i heard the air whistling out of the gas cap hole. Then i blew down the return line heard a " cl-thoonk" as some blockage was cleared, bad part is it blew the gunk into my tank lol. After that i could hear air from the return line as well doing the same whistle as it passed thru the line, tank, and finally out the gas cap. maybe it will pick up now. Im sure there are worse things in my tank other than whatever was clogging the return. ill try later today and let you guys know if any difference.

The "cl-thoonk" you heard was the plastic vent cover on the inside of the sender/pickup assembly being blown off of its location on the underside of the fuel pickup assembly. It wont hurt anything. My sons 86 Z had a clogged pickup line as the car had sat with old gas in the tank for at least 20 years so I just had his apart. The pickup was clogged with about 3" of very thick gum/varnish. I had to poke it out with a coat hanger and then flush the tube with carb cleaner to get it cleared. I don't think you would be able to blow the sock off of the end of the pickup but if you did, then the supply line, as I noticed last week, doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the tank. It relies on the sock to pick up fuel for the very bottom. Try putting more gas in your tank and see if it starts to pick up fuel. The sock on his was on the pickup tube pretty tight, but I guess if you used 120 psi of air it could possibly blow it off, thus not pick up fuel if the tank is low. Since our sock was old and cruddy, I went to Orielly's to get a new one and all they offered was a sock that installed like a "T" (for the fuel injected models), but it was the wrong size and wouldn't even stay on the pickup tube so I used about 4" of rubber gas hose on the end of the tube to make sure it picked up all the way to the bottom and it works just fine. I'm chiming in on this because we just did this last weekend and now everything (including the sending unit now, it had quit also, but I fixed it while I had it apart) works great with only 5 gallons or less in the tank. I hope this is in some way helpful. Been working on these for a bunch of years. I have a '87 'vert, and both sons have 86 Z's so I have probably been over the whole car in one way or another at some time.
