TPS position -- Plunger up or down?

Hey guys,

I pulled my TPS tonght and didn't pay attention to the orientation. I know the plug only goes in one way, but which way does the plunger face? Does it face "up" toward the dowl that pushes down or does it face down toward the bottom of the carb? Can't believe i'm this stupid. Thanks.

Plunger up; spring around the "prong" sticking out the other end.

Re: TPS position -- Plunger up or down?

Thanks. Pretty sure that's how I had it originally. Wasn't getting any readings on it when I probed the connector with it in the car. Bought a new one thinking it was bad. But that one wasn't giving any readings either so I chased my tail on wiring and other stuff. Then had an epiphiny...(Spelled right? lol) Since I wasn't getting any readings in the car, I hooked up the original externally and manually pushed the plunger. Once out, it measured right (.4v to 4v while pressing down on the plunger with my finger), but for some reason I'm not getting that when it's installed. Not sure why.

Getting both the dowel and the adjustment arm to touch the proper parts on the TPS is a little tricky when you're putting the airhorn back on. I found it helps to use some stiff grease to hold the pushrod up when I flip the airhorn over to install it.

I also use a thin screwdriver to hold the TPS down while I do that as well, so it's not trying to pop up out of it's hole.

Kind of operation where it helps to have 3 hands.

I'll try that, I got the new one in without completely removing the airhorn. It was lose on the top, but the rod that holds the primary flaps wasn't removed though I suppose it could have been easily enough.

What concerns me, is why would it have stopped working in the first place...maybe the rod slipped off the plunger? I may enlist my wife if I need another set of hands. She just "LOVES"....working on my car. hehe...

Re: TPS position -- Plunger up or down?

Ok, well, found something interesting. when I first tested the TSP, I didn't get any readings. So I pulled the airhorn off to replace it. I didn't see anything come out and made the assumption that the silver pin on the end of the throttle fulcrum was the part that pushed down on the TPS. Well, I flipped the airhorn over today and there is no pushrod in the thing. So, putting the pushrod in from the kit I got when I bought the TPS and we'll see what happens from here. What is irritating is that...I would think I would have noticed it, if it had fallen out. Since it didn't...or since I didn't, I don't know where it went...could have fallen down inside the carb? Going to do a thorough search for it after lunch and hope I either find it or can prove it's not inside the carb or worse...down in the intake now. what a mess that would make of my heads if it went down into there..ugh. Been running for a month now without any issues though so I'd like to think I"m good in that regard anyway.

The erratic readings are annoying; went through that this year.
Grease to hold that lever pin in place when you're setting the airhorn down usually works.
