Opinions on open air cleaner
Ok, so I now have a 2 inch cowl hood on my 85 and was wondering what you guys thought about open air cleaners instead of the stock setup with the snorkel and a air filter.
I saw some with the little elderbrock triangular shaped one and I personally don't like the look of it.

Don't get the triangle of death.
An open air cleaner will flow better than the stock single snorkel, but it'll be hotter air. Opening the back of the cowl will help while the car is moving.

Re: Opinions on open air cleaner
well I have the harwood brand 2 in. cowl with the double vents so I was thinking I would have the better air flow with a open element.
What brand should I go with? Advanced auto parts has several.

For my money, the Spectre. It's a "rechargeable" filter as opposed to the Proform paper filter, and well better at 1/2 the price!

If you still have a quadrajet you might need a 1/2 or 1/2 inch ring spacer to clear the wire connections on top of the carb. I did with both aftermarket cleaners I tried.

If you have a cowl hood, you don't need a drop base air cleaner (assuming 14x3). If you don't have a drop base air cleaner, you don't need a spacer.
Summit has several choices http://www.summitracing.com/search/D...t/?Ns=Rank|Asc . Personally, I will never buy another Mr Gasket product, but that's up to you.
Also, those oiled cleanable gauze filters let a lot of small particles through, so you might want to rethink that approach. Fine if you don't mind slowly grinding your engine to death.
If you want a really great filter, look into this: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eaar.aspx If I still had a carb'd engine, that's what I'd use (I'm using the cone version for my LS1's).
