What Edelbrock carb for my 355?
Okay so I need a new carburetor. I am thinking of getting an Edelbrock one with electric choke. I am unsure of what carb to get for my application. The engine is a fresh 355 with a Edelbrock Torker 2 intake. I was looking at the 1403 but realized it is 500cfm and wasn't sure if that was what I need or if I should be looking at the 600cfm models like the 1405. If there is a better carb out there for my particular setup than the edelbrock please let me know. I was looking at the Holley carbs but was thinking I may have clearance issues if I were to get one.. are the Holley carbs that much taller than the Edelbrock's? Thanks a million guys,

The standard 1406 would feed your motor just fine (it's 600cfm), and has electric choke - that's what most of the Edelbrock guys run as it's cheap, easy, and will feed most motors well that aren't hp monsters.
The 1405 is identical but doesn't have electric choke (which can be purchased seperately on the shelf at most Pep Boys).

Re: What Edelbrock carb for my 355?
Thanks for the prompt response, good advice on carbs here, the only thing is I cannot use the 1406 as it is not recommended for use with the Torker 2 intake. I know it sounds weird but it is stated right here....http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_...erformer.shtml
(They are not recommended for use on RPM or Torker II intake manifolds. Match with an Edelbrock Performer or Performer EPS manifold and other brands of similar design. )
My 355 had the 1406 carburetor on it when I got it and the car never idled right, always idling up,then down.
So I guess I should look at getting the 1405 as it is 600cfm and is okay to run with the torker 2 intake.

Re: What Edelbrock carb for my 355?
Oh, duh - forgot about that fine print on the Torker II. Double check with Edelbrock - but the 1405 should be fine I guess - like I said you can add the electric choke kit to it since it doesn't come with it. I actually have a 1405 on my car, but I added the electric choke as well, so I just tell everyone it's a 1406 (since they look identical on the outside). Good Luck!

The Holleys aren't any taller than Edelbrocks.
The Torker 2 was about as poor of a manifold as you can imagine. No low RPM capability, and reduces high RPM power. Yuck.
What cam are you running? What transmission? What is your primary use for the car?

Re: What Edelbrock carb for my 355?
I had no idea that the torker 2 intake was such a terrible intake. I thought it was fine. What would you suggest? a Performer intake?? The transmission is a 5 speed.

Re: What Edelbrock carb for my 355?
You are getting the right advice so far.
The 1406 is what you want.
The TorkerII is about the worst manifold out there.
The Edelbrock Performer RPM or RPM air-gap are the best manifolds out there.
There are much cheaper Chinese copies of the above two intakes that can be had for a much cheaper price, and still perform the same.
I believe one is called the Crosswind intake.

With a 5-speed transmission, you want a Holley double pumper. A 600-650 would be fine, depending upon the cam, exhaust, heads, etc.

Re: What Edelbrock carb for my 355?
The only thing I know about the cam was that the guy at the builders said it was an RV type cam, good for horsepower in the mid range...other than that I do not know. What Holley carb in particular would you suggest? I also plan to do away with the torker 2 intake, could you please suggest a good intake/carburetor combination? I just want to get the right stuff this time around. Thanks

With an RV cam, a regular Performer intake and a 600 CFM double pumper would fit the bill. Edelbrock 2101 intake, Holley 4776 plus a $50 electric choke kit.
You will need to use a drop-base air cleaner for hood clearance.

Re: What Edelbrock carb for my 355?
right on, again great info here. Thanks for your input. I just bought a k&N air cleaner assembly...has a 4 inch element. Looks similar to this one......hopefully I wont have any clearance issue. I think the one in the picture is a 5 inch element. Is this a drop base air cleaner?? Thanks in advance

Re: What Edelbrock carb for my 355?
Usually the 3 inch with the drop base will give you no problems, 4 inch I'm thinking might not work. With my car, the drop base with the 3 inch element was touching the hood with a half inch spacer.

Re: What Edelbrock carb for my 355?
I had a 3 inch element on the engine this past summer and it wasn't touching the hood at all. Thinking the 4 inch will fit. Too damn cold to pop the hood and put it on...will have to wait for warmer weather.
