fuel pump dead, options??

Well i just bought this '87 iroc with a carb'd 355 in it. Previous owner had hardwired the intank pump to a switch to a holley non-return style regulator. Needless to say the pump just burned out. I'll drop the tank if I absolutley have to but im thinking:

1) Go to a mechanical pump with carb sump (or will it pull through the dead pump I keep hearing mixed opinions on this?)

2) Holley red pump (through carb sump or dead pump??)

3) New intank pump with mallory regulator (not a good option trying to do on a budget)

I also heard you can suck through the return line if sucking through the dead pump doesn't work, not sure if this is true or not?? I would like to go with a mechanical pump since I already have one laying around I just need a pushrod and a mounting plate..

Not going to do the access hole hack ill just drop the tank if I have to make the carb sump mod, whats the best way to get all the gas out?? I was thinking when I get the unit out just pull the pump out and put in hose between the sock and the tube.

Don't try to pull through a dead pump. It's a dead end.

The return is 5/16", so your volume will be limited if you do it that way. To say nothing of needing a strainer before the pump if you go that route.

Best bet is to drop the tank.

Re: fuel pump dead, options??

I had the pump and I went and got the pushrod the mounting plate and the gaskets today.

It wouldn't pull through the dead pump.

I went to the back by the tank and cut the feed line and hooked it to the rubber of the return line. So now the return pickup is hooked to the feed line 3/8" line and through the fuel filter, and I bought an extra carb fuel filter too. Works good so far.

Its leaking oil where the fuel pumps mounted, I put the gaskets on dry, should I put rtv on them?? The bolts are tight.

You need a filter before the fuel pump to protect it. Replaces the fuel sock you no longer have.

The mechanical fuel pump mount gaskets typically use gasket sealer. Are you sure you have a short bolt in the front bolt hole that goes to the push rod channel?

Re: fuel pump dead, options??

Yeah its a short bolt doesn't go through the pump hole, I already put it in it runs great so far. I have a filter before the pump, I went in the back and I switch the return line onto the feed line so it goes through the stock filter under the car. I'll have to take it off and redo it then with some sealer on it, the gasket looked awefully thin.
