Edelbrock Rocks!!

I have a 84 trans am 305 all stock and had trouble with carb flooding, white smoke on start up just not idleing right. So i had it rebult spent about $200 to get the job done start to finish. Car worked little better but still not like it should. I was thinking if it was something other than the carb making the car work bad. 6 months went by and i have not been using the car much so one of my friend said try and get another carb so i did a edelbrock 1406 on ebay. This is a whole new car. starts right up idles awsome no flooding and no more white smoke at start up. I am really amazed its like i have a new motor. my friend and me put this carb on and all we had to do was adjust the choke and thats it.THESE CARBS ARE GREAT!!

Re: Edelbrock Rocks!!

if you were using a electronic rochester...yeah i had the same problem. out of the blue it would start smoking black and stall. i also went with an edlebrock to fix the problem. they are good a replacement for a daily driver but thats about it.

Re: Edelbrock Rocks!!

hi , i replaced my holley with an edelbrock a while ago ...it runs great!,,i don't need to constantly adjust anything ,,,edelbrocks for the money ,,are worth it....and yes edelbrocks run best with 5-6 max psi fuel pressure,,,just get an inline fuel regulator and set it at 5.5psi and it should run like a charm...

Re: Edelbrock Rocks!!

I am very happy to hear that you are happy with your edelbrock carb, and getting it used I imagine you got a good deal on it. I agree that there is no carb better at bolting on and running good than the one you got.

I will have to say, that I disagree that they are a "better" carb than a q jet or holley. A q-jet can be tricky for some people to set up right, and a lot of people that "rebuild" them might as well drop them off a cliff.

I guess people choose there favorite carb from there own personal experiences, and there is enough junk out there to make anybody hate any one of these carbs, but if you get a good one of any of these carbs you will be happy.

And as far as "constantly adjusting a holley,"If someone is constanly adjusting one, then they just have never got it right yet, these carbs are as good for daily usage as any when they are in fair shape and adjusted right.

this is true............. i have a holley 700 dp supercharger carb on mine and the only thing i did when i got it was change the jets in it to 2 numbers higher on both primary and secondary and have not had to adjust nothing all year...............

Re: Edelbrock Rocks!!

I have a 1406 and I love the thing. I poured slushie down it a few months back and it doesnt idle quite right now (that stuff is like syrup) and let it sit for a few days before I started it again which was probably a bad idea. I get 26mpg highway though

i have 750 cfm edelbrock performance carb on my 67 with 468 and 177 weiand and it runs pretty good, i do want too change it 850 holley or something of that sort eventually. My T/A was originally a TPI so i'm keeping it fuel injected..

i ran my 1406 and my 1407 at 7 or 8 and never had any problems. Both carbs worked perfect for many years.

Re: Edelbrock Rocks!!

i have a 1405 600cfm with electric choke on my 350...it's bolted to an edelbrock performer rpm intake...it runs fine and i like it....bolted it right on out of the box!!
i also never said edelbrocks are better than a Q-jet..or even a hollley...i just simply said for the money and if your not a person who needs to overspend or are on a budget ,,,an edelbrock is a good carb for the money ...it can do anything any other carb can as far as gas mileage and performance..it just needs to be tinkered with for mods.. ...again , it's a great carb for the money....just my 2 cents.

Re: Edelbrock Rocks!!

My Edelbrock 1406 runs better now that I've leaned it out 2 stages from stock. I'm still getting a lean spot in part-throttle though, causing the car to over-heat. I'm just thinking that there's some junk caught in the main jet circuit that I can blow out when I take it off.

Replace "Edelbrock" with "Quadrajet" or "Holley", and what you said would still be true.

Most of the time, it's the level of understanding of the carb that is the deciding factor. If you're willing to learn about them, any of those carbs can be made to function reasonably - as long as it has hope of working on your combo (a 1050 Dominator isn't likely to work at all well on a stock '82 LG4, for instance).

Having said that, I know of two racers who went faster with an Edelbrock carb than they did with something else. In one case, a guy went from an Edelbrock to a Demon, couldn't figure out how to tune the Demon (not convinced he tried that hard, and this was in the time period when members here were reporting quality problems with Demon carbs), put the Edelbrock back on and was happy (haven't seen him at the track for about 7 years). In the other case, a racer had a cobbled together Holley that he kept messing with, bought a new Edelbrock and picked up a few tenths. He then blew up the engine (age old story of an engine running best just before it breaks). He never tried a new Holley or known-good Holley.

All other cases, it's been the other way around - the Edelbrock was slower. This forum is filled with Edelbrock problem threads (as well as Holley and q-jet). There are probably more threads with unresolved Edelbrock problems than of the other types of carbs.

If you have a functioning q-jet, it makes absolutely no sense to replace it with an Edelbrock.

Personally, I have no love for them.

Glad the OP's is working out for him.

Re: Edelbrock Rocks!!

i agree with you ...if you have a functioning q-jet ..keep it on...but if you don't ..and want a decent carb for not too much money ...an edelbrock is a good choice..

Re: Edelbrock Rocks!!

i'm running an edelbrock 1406, i'm sure it works just as well as any carb that is tuned properly. I only bought it because it was on sale. If a holley was on sale i would have bought that and learned how to tune it. I spent 1 day tuning my edelbrock, using a wideband O2 sensor makes it easy to find what rods and jets to use.

I have had nothing but good things about these carbs but I'm a holley guy. (my buddies goof and say I'm not a true chevy fan cause the holleys came on fords).
I think if you don't have to tune your carb, you aren't running at full potential.

I never used a wideband with a carb, but I did use it with my piggy-backed EFI setup on my old car and it plugged into the GReddy Emanage Ultimate easily. The EFI recognized the input and I could tune the car during driving for all conditions.

Of course tuning a car isn't as easy since you have to open the hood, but you can still tune it easily. Get the Innovate Motorsports LC-1 and a gauge and you can watch your numbers while you drive and when you get home you can tune it whichever way you need to.

I used an Autometer ES model, makes tuning so simple! It made it easy to find the right jets for cruise and WOT. All edelbrocks are tuned for idle the same way, regardless of jet/rod selection.
