Help with new Holley carb.
My freind just got a 600 cfm Holley carb and a new intake. for his 84 z-28 L69. I told him he needed a new distributor for the new carb and he doesn't believe me. I tried to find info about getting rid of the CC system but I couldnt find much. what would be a good cheap dizzy to go with the carb that will work and is anything additional needed for the new carb to work? thanks.
oh, the engine is pretty stock. he is also getting new heads right now but I think they are more of just replacement heads insteand of performance heads.

actually helping instead of just looking at the post and then not saying anything would be great.

an HEI distributor is fine. looks like you need the throttle cable bracket and the cable stud

Besides, a simple would have yielded the answer in much less time than what transpired between your posts.
(Yes, you need a different distributor. Unless the replacement carb is a double pumper, it will be a downgrade from the stock computer controlled q-jet. Even then, it could be argued that it's a downgrade.)

Re: Help with new Holley carb.
Agreed. Once you go away from the computer controlled carb you have to go away from the computer controlled distributor as well. When the ECM sees that the computer controlled carb isn't there any more it throws the penalty flag (check engine light) and goes into "limp home mode." Amongst other things this means that it supplies a very weak advance curve to the computer controlled HEI distributor, giving you very poor power/performance and fuel economy.
Another side-effect is that it will no longer automatically lock up your torque converter for you (if equipped with automatic transmission).
The distributor issues is usually addressed by installing an earlier non-computer controlled HEI (one with traditional centrifugal and vacuum advance mechanisms). The torque converter lockup issue can be handled in several different ways.

Re: Help with new Holley carb.
thanks guys. I was a little irritated when i posted that the other day. no harm intended, just frustrated. And i tried to tell him it was to small being only 600cfm when even the stock can go to 700cfm but it was free and honestly If i got a free holley i'd probably put it on too even if it was a little smaller. ha Well that pretty much answers my questions. thanks again.
