Carbed 350 in my iroc and i need help on a swap
Hi everybody just got a 86 iroc z and love it. but it's not running currently. the guy i bought it from said that the orginal engine blew so he got a 350 out of a 86 GM van. it's got a holley 600cfm. and the engine needs a distributer and coil to run. it also has a th350 trans. now i want to keep it simple so what should i do? should i try to get the current setup running or just look for a 305 TPI and 700R4 to put in it? and were could i find a orginal engine and trans?
here's some pics of it.
( yes i kno i need to paint the bumper)

you could, but my opinion is that carbs are cheaper and easier to work on(with some practice), so theres my vote. nice car btw, and welcome to the site

hook up your fuel line, throttle linkage. make sure the distributor is in time and has power. you gotta electric or a manual choke? if electric you're gonna need power to that too, switched source not off the power for the distributor.

Did it have carburetor or TPI originally?
If TPI, it has an in-tank electric pump, and if you use that, you have to regulate the fuel pressure down using a return-style regulator. If you don't use the in-tank electric pump and use an engine-mounted mechanical, you need to drop the fuel tank and remove the in-tank pump.
The large cap HEI distributor with the coil in the cap is what the car had originally, and is the easiest to put in a car that's being modified.

put the number one cylinder tdc on compression stroke, you can look at the balancer with the timing tab so you know your there. drop the distributor in align the rotor with the number one cylinder on the cap. install cap . install ignition wires 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 and your done. but if i were you id go to the parts store spend $20 and it tells you step by step

Is that the one of Craigslist up in Gainsville, asking $1600 or trade? I saw that one and was interested but never called. Good score if you got it cheap.

Re: Carbed 350 in my iroc and i need help on a swap
Good lucK. I just picked up a similar project for 650. Guy had swapped the original 305 for a 350 from a van and quit half way through. I finished the swap using the original intake and injection system and the car is running but having some hot-start issues. I am running the original harness, ECM, etc. If car was originally a TPI, the switch back should be pretty simple.

I assume you will unless you go to an electronic ignition. That may cause problems with the ECM, if you are running one.....

Re: Carbed 350 in my iroc and i need help on a swap
i think that the engine had a tbi unit on it. to put a tpi on it you would have to change the brackets for the accessory mounting. not sure how much of the harness is left either. and the throttle linkage bracket would have to be changed since that looks exactly like my tbi bracket. i think it would be a lot easier to mount the carb back on it.
