Functional 83 Z28 Hood with Carb
Hello All,
I am in the process of converting my '83 Z28 from crossfire to carb. I would like to keep the origional air induction hood functional if possible. I would love to hear from anyone else that runs this combo. I will be installing a 350 with a Performer intake & Q-jet. If it will fit with the stock hood and air box will the origional solinoid still operate the flaps or will I need to install a switch on the throttle linkage such as the one used on '69 cowl induction Camaros?
I am a long time first generation Camaro owner and this is the first third gen I have owned (I did race a friends in NHRA super stock for a couple of years) & its been fun so far. Iam sure I will have more questions in the future.
Thanks
David

Don't know if it would work, but 83-83 trans ams with L69s had an air cleaner system that worked with the trans am cowl hood.

Not relevant to your question, but I thought about going with a hood scoop of some sort as well.
I found that it would be harder to tune the carb because the airflow will be different depending on vehicle speed.
So I stayed with a closed hood.
Of course if you do full race then it doesn't matter.

Thanks for the input. I don't think I have ever seen a Firebird L69 air cleaner, I guess I always assumed they were the same as the L69 Z28. I will try to look into that option. Thanks again.
I'm in southwest Ohio by the way. Did you get any wind damage up there? We had alot down here but were pretty much back to normal now.

I would sugest you run any kind of scoop you like the look of on your car. If the carb is tuned correctly it will run fine either way (scoop or no scoop). You will simply show more of a power increase as the as the air outside gets better unless you are way to lean to begain with.
I have raced many cars over the years some with scoops some without & my opinion is that although a functional scoop will most definantly make more power either way will work fine so go for the look you like on your car.
My '57 Chevy lost about 5 or 6 hundredths when I went from a fiberglass hood with a scoop to the stock flat steel hood & hinges but I was rewarded with a 60' time decrease of 3 to 4 hundredths and a more consistant car & I love the way the car looks with the stock hood.

I have a RPM intake and a holley 750 with a drop base filter and my hood will not close with the hood scoop brackets and such attached to the hood. I have to remove it in order to close the hood
