what can cause the float needle to stick?

Car: 2005 BMW 545i
Engine: 4.4L N62B44
Transmission: 6spd auto
Axle/Gears: Rotating
what can cause the float needle to stick?
when the needle has no shoulder on it the jet itself seems to be clean as can be and the needle seems to be clean as well. just a little tap seems to work at least but that would be a pain to do everytime.
