Re: Whats the best way to remove holley choke horn

well u can just cut it off with a grinder and clean it all up good with a die grinder, but y are u taking it off. its not going to effect your flow enough on ur 305 to notice, and it sure is nice having a choke on a street car...

Agreed... best way is to replace it with a purpose-built chokeless main body.

That said, I removed the one on my 4777 with a cut-off wheel on a die grinder to 'rough it out' then a grinding bit to clean it up and smooth out the edges. Worked well. You'll really want to blow it out with compressed air, dip it in carb cleaner for a night, and blow it out again after though... there will be lots of metal shavings.

Re: Whats the best way to remove holley choke horn

Its a holley 750 dp

Its not for street use, I have never used the choke.

I have never used a choke on a street car either. This is in SC.

Its on a race only 350

I was thinking about using a drimnel tool with cut off wheels and a hand file.

What is the main benefit of this mod?

Re: Whats the best way to remove holley choke horn

It can make it harder to start cold.. what is your reason for wanting to do this?

Re: Whats the best way to remove holley choke horn

Only reason I did it was for clearance issues... it fit OK with a drop base air cleaner under the hood with a 3" filter, but after checking closer, the top of the choke horn was about 1/8" away from the lid, which I would think would be a HUGE resitiction. I have yet to use the carb though.

I think I found a way around the cold start problem though... at least for the 4150/4160 Holleys anyway. I bought an A/C kicker solenoid and bracket from Holley (used to bump open the throttle to up the idle speed when the A/C is turned on). It can kick the throttle open quite far though, and is totally adjustable, so put that on a switch and use it to keep it idling fast enough to run decently untill its a little warm, then turn it off to let it idle normally.

You'd probably waste more fuel pumping the accelerator trying to keep a not-warmed engine running than you would with a properly operating choke.

Re: Whats the best way to remove holley choke horn

I cut it off with a dremnal tool.

Then went to sanding drums and smooth stones.

I was much easier than I anticipated.

Re: Whats the best way to remove holley choke horn

I thought I read somewhere that cutting the choke off will mess up the flow to the air bleeds or something like that. I think they said you have to adjust the air bleeds after cutting it. I don't know... I do know that I've seen lots of people do it before and I just barely heard about the "air bleed" thing.
