ok....won't start
my problem with the fuel injected system that was converted to carb before i bought it has continued. I wanna say it's the fuel pump but im not sure. in the event that it is the fuel pump should i just replace it or just convert the rest of the system to carb????? help i am not sure what is going to be better in the long run.

Re: ok....won't start
more details would be great.. whats it doing?? turning over but wont start? wont even attempt to turn over? I just completed my tbi to carb swap as well and couldnt be happier... Give me some details... if u think its the fuel pump then unhook the fuel hose away from the carb and turn it on and see if any fuel comes out.. did u swap from tpi or tbi?

Re: ok....won't start
Squirt some starting fluid in it.
Does it start? Yes/no.
Yes: the car has a fuel problem
No: the car has some other problem, don't work on the fuel system
Start at the beginning. Not, bypass common sense and troubleshooting, and just jump directly to replace / convert / hack / rewire / whatever.

it turns over, but won't start. it started up about a week ago and died immedietely. now it won't even start all the way. when i turn the key i can't hear the fuel pump humming anymore. it cranks but won't start completely.

Alright, as Sofakingdom said, you need to start eliminating possabilities. First is fuel: with a can of starting fluid (or carb cleaner, either will work) spray a one-second stream down the primary barrels of the carb (the front two) and work the throttle once or twice. Try and crank it, if it fires, then it's a fuel problem. If it was an in tank pump, I would suggest getting the carb pick-up instead and either using a good manual pump which doesn't require nearly as much work, or an electric set-up which will require a pump, a regulator, and a bit of tube modification.
If you still can't get it to fire with the starting fluid, it's an issue in the ignition system, either your timing is off or you are not getting spark. When you converted it to carb, did you change to a vacuum advance distributor? If not, that could be the problem. One more thing- if you are running the stock pump, make sure the relay is good and you are using a pressure regulator in-line before the carb. Hope this helps,

well i sprayed starter fluid in the carb, and it fires but doesn`t stay running. so fuel pump coulb be a problem.if i put a carb pick up or mechanical pump on do i have to take out the in tank pump and/or redo the fuel system? help this is my first conversion
thanks

OK, fuel problem.
Does the pump run for 2 sec when you turn the key on?
Yes: possible regulator or line problem
No: pump or relay or ECM problem
Still not ready to jump directly to "replace/redo the {fill in the blank}". Finish troubleshooting first. Find out what's actually wrong with it before just *****-nilly starting to swap parts.

Re: ok....won't start
Do that by checking for voltage at the wire that goes to the pump (the relay "output", so to speak).

Re: ok....won't start
ok so i was thinking that i would just try to do a mechanical pump instead of messing with the in-tank pump right away. i wanted to know if anyone knows if that will work with the cam that's in the engine. and what i should get.
thanks

Even if you go to carb, you have to drop the tank and remove the pick-up to change it out for the carb'd one. There is no commercially available pick-up that I know of, you will most likely have to build your own or get a used one from a junk yard.
Here's a down and dirty list of what you will need:
Carb pick-up
Fuel pump- HLY-12-834-$63.95
Push rod- ARP-134-8701-$15.88
Pump mounting plate- TRD-2310-$5.99
Braided stainless hose, 10'- SUM-230610-$36.95
Banjo inlet- SUM-220695B-$12.39
Total cost, without handleing charges and other fittings that you would need is already 135.16. It wouls be cheaper to keep the stock electric set up, but these are all the things you will need if you want to swap over.

Or check out the nifty sticky at the top of this forum that shows how to convert an in-tank electric pick-up to straight pick-up.

Re: ok....won't start
so i was thinking.... how about i get a 350 block carb w/cam and crank that work with carb and get mechanical pump and regulator. any thoughts? good idea , bad idea?
thanks again

Shure, if you want to go with a 350 and you have the time and money, it's an option. If you are going to go through the trouble, I would suggest upgrading the exhaust and intake to take full advantage of the new cubes, but that really depends on your budget. If you get a junk motor, it should have the stock fuel pump in place with alll the mounting hardware. I would recomend installing a new pump at least, you will still have to change out your stock fuel lines or run them to the pass. side. This is easily accomplished with the engine removed, just remember to route them away from heat sources. Look at spending some $$ to get everything set up in a reliable and powerful manner.

Re: ok....won't start
ok. so today i found out that a wire was disconnected that went to the fuel pump. i hooked back up and the pump turns on. however, the carb still isn't gas and it won't start.i checked to make sure the lines weren't leaking anywhere. any thoughts?

Re: ok....won't start
Hey,
I'm having the same problem with mine. I have spark, and the fuel pump is working fine. I read in another post, where a guy had a similar problem and he replaced his ECM and it's okay now. Good Luck!!

i didn't remember hearing which regulator you where running? what is your fuel pressure set at? i have already done this swap from tpi and it was actually easier than i was expecting.
