Wifes camaro
I just picked up an 83 camaro for my wife, it has a 307 out of a 1970 chevy pickup with low miles. The car runs great but it also runs out of steam real fast at about 4000rpm! It,s all done with the little 2brl on it. I would like to know what you all think would be a good intake carb combo for this motor...it is all stock but I am thinking about putting in a bigger cam, I dont know yet. How about those edelbrock cam, intake and carb packages? Otherwise I was thinking of an edelbrock duel plane intake and a holley 570cfm street avanger vacuum secondary carb. I am thinking that combo would still have good throttle responce and increase higher rpm performance...do you think this would be a good combo for this motor?

Re: Wifes camaro
I got a 350 in my TA...this is the wifes car and she dont need alot of power but she does like to kick it down on the freeway once in a while. I am just looking for alittle more top end power for cheap...say about 3 or 4 hundred bucks and not have to change the motor. Actually this little 307 is a great running motor, she is getting about 18mpg on the highway. I guess it came out of a 1970 truck and the guy who owned it had a total rebuild and crashed the truck 10,000 miles later and they put the motor in this camaro and drove it last summer and put another 5,000 miles on it. I seen all reciepts for rebuild and the motor looks and sounds like new, no ticking, leaks ect ect.

That sounds perferct.
I would do less restrictive intake and exhaust then. Just let that 307 breathe a little bit!
Have fun with it.....

Even a stock intake & Q-jet with headers would be A big improvement,
& the mileage should stay the same or better if you keep your foot out of it.
A small cam would also help but with cam lobe failures these days it may not be worth the risk.

The Edelbrock cams are pretty old-school. A more modern grind like a Comp XE258 or XE262 would really wake it up while maintaining decent idle and mileage.
An Edelbrock Performer or Weiand Action+ intake would do fine. I wouldn't bother with with the SA type of carbs, if you really want vacuum secondary then just get a universal 600 CFM.
What transmission does it have?

Re: Wifes camaro
It has an automatic 700r4
Is a holley a spread bore or square bore carb? And would I need a SB or SB manifold? Do you know the part #'s for the carb and intake I would need? Probably going to order from summit. Yes 600cfm vacuum secondary sounds good.

The typical universal Holley is squarebore. They make a 4165 style, 6210 List that is a double pumper spreadbore. Not a bad choice to maintain good driveability and economy with some punch when you want it. Only drawback is it is divorced choke style, so you need to have an intake-mounted choke thermostat (to the best of my knowledge - unless somebody is making a conversion that I haven't heard about), or run a manual choke.
With the TH700, you need to be extra careful about the TV cable geometry and hook-up. It isn't just a "kickdown" or "detent" cable like they had in 1970.
Forgot to ask about the distributor. Hopefully it isn't the 1970 points-type still.

Re: Wifes camaro
put some cheap vortecs on there. run a 262 cam and holley 600. pick up a good used intake somewhere. this really could be done cheap enough if your shortblock is good. probably make 300 horse ???

Not good, if you're talking about the original Camaro distributor. You're only getting minimal advance, if any. The computer needs inputs from the carb that it's not getting from a 1970 2bbl. You need a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor.
It will mount either one.
so if I get the double pumper 600cfm spreadbore with a manual choke what kind of manifold would I need? Does the edelbrock performer come in squarebore and spreadbore?

Re: Wifes camaro
It does have a vacuum line going to it...I thought it was original but it could be an earlier electronic ignition. I do know it is not points though and it does have a vacuum line...maybe mid 70's HEI?

Re: Wifes camaro
I'd make sure it's an HEI. Set up the timing a bit more aggressively for a better seat of the pants feel. A spring kit and maybe an adjustable vacuum can. Make sure you're getting a good hot spark, if it's an old dist, a coil and module perhaps. (or a complete dist like summits $94 special, is a REALLY good bang/buck setup).
A 4bbl stock Camaro aluminum intake with a non-cc q-jet from the wreckers is a great investment. You'd be out $100 for the total setup, and you'd be in the same HP ballpark as the rest of the suggestions. Save your extra cash to upgrade the exhaust and you'll be laughing.
