Need some help with my 600cfm Edelbrock

Edelbrock Woes: Fresh build 383 with vortec heads. Using a 600cfm Edelbrock performer carb.

The car starts and revs fine when cold. It seems like it starts to flood if you don't keep the rpms up and the idle air screws do nothing (which they should!) Also leaking a little bit of fuel through the power valve I think it is, plunger into the fuel bowl that's connected to the throttle linkage? After a warm restart, lots of white smoke and gotta have it floored to get it to crank.

Could low vaccuum due to a more agressive cam cause this? My thinking is that the lower vaccuum is causing the motor to compensate air through the carb instead of the bleeds (maybe a tuning error) and that it doesn't have enough vaccuum to keep the power valve closed which is causing the flooding and fuel leakage.

Need some input!

Well, not sure I can help much, but a few observations. The Edelbrock doesn't have a power valve like the Holley carbs. That plunger you noticed is actually the accellerator pump. If fuel is coming out there, I would wonder if your fuel pressure is too high or the float level is off allowing the fuel bowl to be overfilled with fuel. I'd check your fuel pressure and float level first. I would also clean out the needle and seat and make sure some sort of junk didn't jam the needle open and allow unrestricted fuel to fill the bowl to overflowing. It sounds like the carb is being overpowered by fuel and fuel pressure and is forcefeeding the engine fuel it can't even use. I wonder what your plugs look like...black?... wet with fuel? Let us know how it checks out.

Fuel pressure is 3-4psi. The carb is new, but will check the float levels tommorow and re-adjust as needed.

I seem to recall reading something in a edelbrock manual about low vaccuum causing something to stay open and flooding it out due to cams with a long duration.

I'll take a look at the plugs in the morning, I do anticipate them being black.

EDIT: Metering rods is what I was thinking of. If the manifold vaccuum is below 7" HG they are probably in the rich position. That combined with the idle air is possibly causing the nozzles to dump fuel at idle (got right from the manual pretty much)
Will take a reading on the vaccuum in the morning as well.

Cam is:
Grind Number CS X4 270HR-11

Gross Valve Lift 0.474/0.474
Duration At 0.006 Tappet Lift 270/274

Still driving me up the wall, was able to get it to where it doesn't load up as much, but still not where I need it. The plugs seem ok, not like I thought they was going to be.
