Hesitation when passing
i have a problem that is very slowly getting worse. When I am rolling and decide to punch it I get an initial hesitation, then it gets down to business. It is most noticeable in 4th or 5th gear. When I got the car, it was hardly noticeable, however, over the past few months it has been getting worse, it is not terrible yet, but I want to nip this in the bud b4 it gets any worse! It has the orig. q-jet that I am thinking needs a rebuild. Any thoughts? (and i have tried the search button!)

With the air cleaner off, and the flaps open, (i think they are open when the choke is operating?) looking at the two nozzles (one in each barrel) that are pointed at a slight angle, (like this, \ / ) there is no stream of fuel that comes out. If there is any fuel at all it is a very slight dribble, b/c I did not see any fuel. Of course, I am unfamililar with carbs, so I may be looking at the wrong area!
Thanks, Robert

You may have either a fuel bowl that is leaking all its fuel, an accelerator pump failure, or incorrect float level.
If you can verify that the fuel pump is providing pressure to the carb, it may be time to open the lid for some repairs.

What is the best way to verify that my fuel pump is working correctly? I have a mechanical fuel pump and have never heard a pre pump, I assumed that there was not one due to the age of the car.

beachbum, just making sure you were doing the test right there...
when looking down the venturi, and the car is running, you shouldn't really see any fuel... grab the throttle arm, and throttle it, so the car revs up a bit, as you twist the throttle arm, you should notice 2 distinct squirts of fuel. If not, rebuild the carb and make sure you replace the accelerator pump (comes in the rebuild kit.) Then check it. Also re-set the float level.
If the car runs ok normally, then I'd think the fuel pump is ok. But that
Snoop through my webspace for the Q-jet papers. One is a troubleshooting guide, and there's a tuning guide.

oh, well, I guess technically it doesn't have to be running... whoops. Just wanted to make sure you were twisting the throttle while looking down the venturi. If you were just looking there, you wouldn't see the fuel, but when you rev the car, it should squirt....
Anyway, good luck with it.

Also I'd be careful sticking my face to look down the venturi when the engine is running, one backfire and your face will be in pain! I'd let it run for a little bit and then turn it off , then I would do the test .

maybe one of the fuel jets in the carb is clogged. Go buy so STP carb cleaner and pour it in the tank....bet it will work miracles as it did when i had the exactly same problem.
