If you're looking to add power to your LG4 V8, you should not be looking to swap carburators. The stock q-jet can flow up to around 750 cfm, and that is more than your 305 will need unless you do some major changes to the internals of the engine. You would see a big horsepower increase by putting on a free-flowing exhaust system. If your carburator is not working correctly, rebuild it or have it rebuilt. It's not that expensive. That way, instead of paying money for a new carb(and distributor and TCC lockup to make it work with your engine), you can invest in an exhaust system.

Study & Rebuild

rads84n94camaro,

I have to agree 100% with 85cmroz28. The Rochester is a Great Carb....... If you study a little and understand how it works and how to rebuild and adjust it. There are tons of things you can do to add some performance to your 305 that will produce more HP than a new carb.

To get the ultimate performance out of your Rochester you'll need:
A couple special hand tools (about $20)
A Dwell Meter ($50)
A MultiMeter ($50)
A book (See Attached Photo, About $15) at AutoZone.

SUGGESTION: Get the book and start reading first. Post questions once you get ready to proceed and a BUNCH of TGO Guys (myself included) will lend a hand in short order.

I love the Quadrajet. What worked for me was changing the rods/hangars. Also a good little trick is the A/V tension spring adjustment.

Check here .. might be some info to help you get started...

Thanks yall i was actually thinkin about rebuilding the motor kuss its blowin some blue smoke and i think its burnin oil the only thing is im not a 100% sure because the carburetor isnt running a 100% so i figured mayb that mite b part of the reason. If i do decide to rebuild the motor whats some good suggestions for rebuilding and adding hp.

My suggestion...bebuild a 350

Seriously, 350s are much easier to find parts for and it would probably cost close to the same amount to buy and rebuild a 350 as it would to rebuild your 305. Plus the power difference is definately significant.

If you're going through the pain of rebuilding an engine, you might as well build a bigger, better engine rather than spend all that time and money on an engine that's not really that powerful.

Most small block Chevys have hardened/cracked valve stem seals that cause blue smoke at start-up, and some oil use. Replacing those seals is a matter of removing valve covers, spark plugs, and rocker arms, pressurizing the cylinder through the spark plug hole (or stuffing rope into the cylinder through the spark plug hole, as some people like to do), removing the valve spring, and replacing the seal. This is a lot easier and cheaper than rebuilding the engine. This is also good time to replace the weak factory valve springs and eliminate those heavy and useless valve rotators. Good thing to do if you're planning on a cam replacement.

If you want an excuse to do other things, like a 350, that's a different story.

I'd stay with the 305 and do a carb rebuild. I went through the whole 305 to 350 thing. Now I have a strong motor.... and a couple of broken rear ends.

What do you want to do with the car?

Here's what I'd do.

1. carb rebuild
2. 1-5/8 headers and catback
3. Sub frame connectors
4. LCA's
5. Torque converter 10" 3500
6. new springs/shocks

Later on.... slap in the 383 that you've been saving for .. and the 9 inch

I liked my 305. I could get away with flooring it all over. Now with the 350..... it's kinda dangerous to be doing that kind of speed on the streets...

Rob..
