Bad Choke
hey guys, I recently purchased an '87 firebird trans amcarbed with the 305. Runs pretty good does need work, one of the issues being the choke on the carb is messed up. The previous owner stuck some tinfoil under the clip that operates the choke open and close. If the tinfoil is dislodged and I shut the car off, it diesals. Whith the foil in there lodeged correctly it keeps the choke halfway open all the time. Upon first start of hte day I need to pump it 10 or moe times to get gas in the carb so it will start. I have tried pumping it only a few times and I have worked my way to pumping it like 15 times to get it to start. Once it starts, unless I sit and rev it to 2000, when I put it in gear and hit the gas, it dies on me. I know very little about carbs, but I do know I shouldn't have to pump it that many times to get it started on a SUMMER morning. Most other carbed vehicles that are running right would get flooded. I have owned carbed cars before but its been a while. Any thoughts or sugestions? thanks

Without the tinfoil, is the choke open or closed? Is the choke wire connected? Is the choke light on while the engine is off, and on while it's running?

it diesels when you shut it off without that tinfoil? huh, that's also strange....
I'd look at your base timing, as well as consider a carb rebuild altogether.... (not that tricky to do yourself....)
