correct alternator bracket
ok I am looking for the correct alternator upper bracket for a 1984 LG4 305 V8 with the stock intake manifold. the reason I ask is that I am almost finished refreshening this engine and find that there are 2 types of brackets one that mounts on the water neck for a long WP and one that mounts on the intake for a short pump. Now I always thought that the water pump on small block chevy's were all the same, what the hell is this long and short WP description? how can you tell them apart? anyways any input would be helpful

All 3rd gen SBCs were long water pumps. IIRC, the transition from short to long came around 1969 or 1970. Except Monzas had shorts. And Vettes, too, I believe.
I don't know the dimensions off the top of my head. It's pretty obvious when you see them side-by-side.
