Carb is a flamethrower !!!!!
Hey guys heres the problem. My Carb has decided that it will shoot flames at me like a flamethrower as i'm working on the car. My timing is set at 0 at 1000 rpm's the distrib vacum advance is unhooked. When i rip on the throttle to see if this is what the car likes flames shoot out of the carb and makes loud noises like gunshots. My mixture is 2 1/2 turns from being cranked all the way in and there is very little white smoke coming from the pipes. The car has no computer or electronic sensors to control timing or mixture. I have 4 to 1 headers into 2.5 straight pipe all the way to the muffler. The moter is a 350 with a holley 600 carbwith the choke un hooked. Please help i am frustrated to all Hell with this car.

The car would be idling fine and running good and as soon as i would open the throttle quickly is when it would shoot flames at me. If I would open the throttle slowly this would not happen.

i've seen my carb do something similar when it starts to diesel (after key is turned off) it will shake for a second and like a whale will spray out a mist of gas.
but in your case i think its backfiring, or the wiring is backwards, or off timing, or you have a problem with your rockers (too tight).
why do you have your vacuum advanced unhooked? what kind of carb? comp controlled? model no? q-jet? single or double pump?
after a quick search, apparently this is a common enough problem.

So what happened to the car, right before it started doing this? What is this "working on the car" you speak of? Any carb work lately? tune-up work? trip to the track? running fine and it just up and started it while driving down the road? etc. etc.
Sounds to me like one of those cases where a little history might help weed out wild guesses..... which is about all we can do without it.

Fireballs usally mean timing, advance it to about 10 to 14 initial with the advance unhooked and see if it goes away. 0 timing at 1000rpm is not enough!! Once you get the timing set, hook the advance back up and see how it runs. 36 total by 3,000 rpm is a pretty good start. Every holley i have had liked about 3/4 to 1 full turn out on the mixture screw at idle, but its best to set them with a vacuum gauge.

Don't know much about Holleys but I do know that there is sometimes a problem with the "Power Valve".
Otherwise, MAKE SURE your ignition wires are all coming and going where they are supposed to.
Good luck!

The car has set for 3 months because i was doing a tranny swap. the prior tranny lost 2nd and 3rd, so it would take off great redline and go to 4th eventually when i would let off the gas and coast about 50 ft. So i got another 700r4 and pulled the motor put the new tranny in and buttoned every thing up. Now when it's time to go try out the new tranny i have this problem where it will idle but as soon as you open the throttle like you would to launch at the track it spits fire at me. This car was tuned port but the guy that owned the car before me desided to convert it to a carbed setup. so half the tuned port wires where still in the car so i cut them out when i had the motor pulled to try and make the engine compartment cleaner. The car has no computer controlled componets any more the distributor is an accel hei set up. My carb is a holley 600 cfm 4 bbl that is not setup for computer controls in any way. I have never been to the strip with this car. as soon as i got it i drove it around for less than a week and lost second and third gear so i started the new trans swap. Working on the car was me trying to get all the stupid little things done from doing that trans swap like hook up power steering lines hook up altenator install water temp and oil pressure gauges just all the final assembly things. I never have done a tune up oon it but the plugs and wires cap and rotor also the pcv valve all appeared to be pretty good the oil is new. I didn't notice any vacume leaks either. Thanks for the help guys i need it.

Had the same thing happen in my car, Except it was on the drive to work, And it was because the distributor had turned on me while driving...
