Got Cowl Hood-Should I get taller filter & X-stream lid?
I got a cowl hood this weekend. Should I get a taller air filter? I have a 14x3 right now. I was thinking of getting a 14x4 along with a K&N X-stream flow lid. Would getting a taller filter be worth it or a waste of money? The lid should help out som. I do have a drop base and was thinking I should get a flat base now since I have the room along with a carb spacer.

I have heard carb spacers are a waste of money. The flat base would help out and an x stream lid would be worth it only because of the cowl induction. From the mods you have listed it should be able to utilize that extra inch of intake.
I better idea than all of this would be to make a enclosure for the air cleaner on the bottom of the cowl hood.

Ok, I am going to hold off on a bigger filter right now. They are expensive anyway and I can use that for other things. So the plan is 1 inch spacer, flat lid and K&N top.
I want to upgrade the intake manifold within the next couple of months. What kind of intake manifold would you guys recomend for me?

If your sig is a complete list of your mods, the K&N lid and an intake upgrade aren't going to make much difference. Neither is the spacer.
Sealing the cowl/filter from the engine compartment would yield more benefit than anything else until you upgrade the exhaust, cam, and heads. After you do those things, then you can consider an intake like RPM or Stealth - and the lid still isn't going to help any on a 14x3 inside a cowl.

Don't bother with the K&N lid, it wont help you. From what I've heard, you might actually be worse off using one of those over a factory lid (or any other flat-ish steel type lid) because it disrupts the flow of air into the carb. If you look at how a good air cleaner base looks inside, you'll see how its designed to have air flow smoothly into the throttle bores. The K&N lid kills that.
As for the manifold... what carb are you using?

I have a stock qjet. Anybody remember that one article where a magazine did a bunch of bolt on mods to an lg4? First they did full exhaust, then manifold, carb, cam and then heads or something like that?

Check out the Sept issue of Car Craft. Here they compare different combinations of 14x4" K&N filters on a 454 CI Big Block at Westech. Flat base, Stub Stack and Extreme filter top came out best overall of all the combo's. ( BTW...Car Craft regaining respect since Jeff Smith has become Editor IMHO )
Key to any air cleaner package is to have the maximum clearance above the airhorn of the carb that you can. The addition of a K&N Stub Stack has produced more power and torque in every article that I have read.
