need some choke help (holley 4160)

The choke is set way too rich, to the point where the car stumbles and blows smoke for about the first 30 seconds. I turned the spring housing almost all the way to lean but this doesn't help much. It just makes the choke open too quickly which makes the fast idle kick off too early and the car has trouble idling at 750rpm. I was thinking I can bend the arm that closes the choke flaps so that when the choke is on the flaps don't close all the way. Would this lean out the mixture?

Just a thought,I had a problem like the one you describe and played with the choke for days trying to make it better. The choke had always worked perfectly before this.I finally took the carb off to get a better look and saw gas puddled in the intake. One of the base plate- to- main body screws goes into the front fuel bowl and was loose, letting gas leak into the intake. It would run like crap for a couple of minutes and once the gas was burned off, would run normally. Not saying this is your problem, but it would be easy enough to check out.Just open the throttle and have a look down the carb with a flashlight before you start up in the morning. You'll know if there's too much gas down there.
