Homemade dual air snorkel!
Hey, I read the great tech article on here about making your own dual snorkel intake and I'm building my own. How many of you have made your own? How well does it work? Did you have any problems getting it to fit or any tips ? Personally, my coolant overflow tank is kinda in the way, can I get a smaller one somewhere? Let me know what ya'll think!

I was in the process of fabricating one when I located a factory type. There is only one size overflow tank, but the ones that came with the factory dual-snorkel had a tab molded in for a support bracket. I haven't seen any problems not having it.
Here is my only dual-snorkel fabrication. Not 3rd gen, sorry...

I made my own - sorry no pics. I got a smaller rad bottle, and actually mounted under the plastic cover up front, in front of radiator. Anything can be used for a bottle - I've even seen Budweiser cans used. Just hunt a yard for any bottle that will fit where ever you want it, and route a hose.
I have a TBI. I used an additional air cleaner housing, cut off the metal snorkel, riveted to my housing that I had cut a new opening in, sealed with epoxy filler, and hosed it all black. I used air ducting from Autozone, and the extra plastic inlet from the extra air cleaner assy. So, the end product looks identical on pass side as driver side. Total cost, $15.
1 other thing - I had to move my heat diverter valve towards firewall to fit air duct between it and A/C unit - I simply cut the heater hoses about 2 inches shorter, thus moving entire thing 2 inches back.

Update if anyone cares...
Well, I decided to just move the 2nd snorkel over a bit, seeing as even in I put in an "aftermarket" overflow container, I'd have to move some goofy smog pump hoses, but I'm almost done, just gotta pop rivet it on there, I'll post pics when I'm done. It doesn't look as nice as I'd like it to since its not symetrical, but it should work just fine. Oh well.

I'm thinking about getting a closed 14" air cleaner and hooking a 3" exhaust pipe to it(that will be bent down a little) and go all the way up th one of the front corners with a big cone filter on the end( side of the radaitor).
To find the best spot for the filter I was planning on blowing a big fan at the front of my car to help find where the air is coming in.
If I do this I'll post some pics and say if it helped or not.
Right now uncoated headers and open air cleaner is my enemy

On the headers - I coated my own. Now I'll be first to agree it's no $300 pro job, but the spray cans were $8 a piece from Summit for ceramic coating, and I snagged an old oven at a yard sale for $20, another $8 for 20ft of heavy guage 240volt wire form home depot, and I was cooking my self-sprayed headers on the deck, while I grilled steaks. I simply pulled out and unwired the kitchen oven, and wired up my $20 oven through the window from the deck - that way any fumes didn't kill the kids (ok, I'll admit - with 4 boys I did stop and ponder the advantages of fumes indoors just for a sec).
They aren't beautiful - won't win any shows - but the ceramic is apparent (can see small clumps of it and the finish is rough), the car doesn't seem to get much hotter than before underhood, and I saved a bundle.
Just another possibility from the King of Tight!

I picked up a factory dual snork awhile ago. Those things are getting tougher to find. Because I have to worry about the smog police here (California) I kept my old single snork so I could put that on come inspection time.

Looks pretty good, except for being a tad offcenter. But I suppose that can't be helped.
Nice job. Hope you feel a difference performance-wise.

The factory dual has a thermovac valve on the passenger side as well. However, it doesn't draw warm air from the exhaust manifold like the driver's side does, just blocks that snorkel off so the warm air comes in from the driver's side.
Not sure what Herr Inspektor will think of it.

Yeah, I was wondering about "herr inspektor" as well. I think I'm just gonna put the thermvac thing over the hole there, and see how it goes. If he gives me a hearty "nien", I guess I'll just go pick up a stock air cleaner. Anyways, thanks for responding folks.

Well, guess it depends upon your defination of "need". For strict by-the-book emissions inspection, need. For elimination of off-idle flat spot, probably need. Other cases, may not need.

Why the dual snorkel? Hasnt it been proven that a nice open element is just as good?
Like the new extreme filters from K&N. Would be cool to see back to back races while trying both, but I'm almost sure that a nice open element will perform just as good.
BTW, please dont explain to me how cool air is better...

Thanks for the info five7kid, I have just finished to make my dual snorkel and I think that I would have to keep the 2 thermovac valve... ...too late!!

Thanks for the input.
Thats good if you gained with the dual snorkel over a conventional open air element.
As soon as someone gains mph/tenths with a dual snorkel over a new K&N Xtreme filter with my watching is when I'll become a true Cold air intake beleiver

Pete,
Nice, clean install. Looks factory original.
Did you just turn one of the original plastic scoops upside down to fit the other side?
I think most people on this board will agree that the cool air from those dual snorks is better than an open element. Just my .02 worth.

i made a custom dual snorkel for my old lg4 according to the tech article. No noticable performance gains but it totally changed the sound of the engine, made it sound really nice.
I'm gonna eventually buy a stock one for the l69 and use the lid from my current one so i can have dual snorkel and cowl action .

You know, I have no idea. Since that picture I JB'd a piece of round sheet metal over that hole. I'm gonna go get it smogged next weekish, so I'll let you know. If it doesn't pass, I have a spare stock one. So, stay tuned and you will know.

Here is mine.
My second snorkel is pop riveted on and painted black. I removed the guts out of the snorkel but left the thermac on top to look factory. I sealed off the lower stove pipe opening by using a small round circle of metal and used JB Weld and then pop riveted in place so it is a complete seal. I took the right side snorkel inlet, flipped it over and took my time with the dremel to make it match the right side inlet. I cut the side mounting tab off that would have connected to the washer fluid tank to clean it up. I used my dremel to cut out the opening into the air cleaner and then bent the edges over facing into the snorkel. It came out well and flows very smoothly. You have missed one key thing to this great upgrade. You need to get a different lid that will allow you to use the 3" filter like the Monte Carlos did. Best upgrade I ever did, dual snorkel and different lid. I went to the junk yard and scrounged like 8 lids that make our cars use the 3" filter. They come off the mid 80's caprices, bonnevilles with V8's. They stick up higher to allow you to put in a 3" filter and the hood closes with no issues. My throttle response is much better! Here's a pic of the 3" lid, Good Luck and PM me if you need any help the set-up.

Its called a thermac. Yhe one on your drivers side is functional. It runs off of a vacuum line that connects under the air cleaner, that is connected to a sensor. This sensor in turn gets a vacuum feed from the front of the carb by a vacuum line as well. The thermac has a flexible tube under it that connects to a circular tube on top of our exhaust manifold. The thermac on top opens and closes a butterfly type valve inside the snorkel itself. If it is cool the temp sensor in the air lid will provide vacuum to the thermac and it closes the valve in the snorkel to outside incoming air and gets the air for the engine off of the heated exhaust manifold. I helps the carb run better on colder mornings. When it its not cold it will leave the valve open to outside air. My pass side thermac is there for looks only. The true L69 dual snorkel has both so I kept both but only made the drivers side functional.

On a factory type, the passenger side Thermac just closes off the snorkel, there isn't any tube going to the exhaust manifold on that side. All of the warm air is provided via the driver's side snorkel.
