Make sure it's working correctly.

What exactly are you asking?

you could throw a torker II intake by edelbrock on it with a small four barrel...that would be for some more power....

wrong post....

But I'll comment anyway.

Seriously there isn't much you can do for it. 5spd cars got decent gears (3.42s); I don't know about auto cars... The motor itself is just anemic as hell. The 4bbl option is always there, but I don't think there's a carb you can put on that's compatible with the factory computer system--unless you can fit a Qjet on there. And i'd suspect a Qjet might be a little big for a 173 on the primaries...

Well adding 2 more pistons is a great idea EXCEPT my 84 has 23,000 org miles on it and it is pre-mo! I really don't want to mess with it much. I don't mind adding stuff that you can not tell was added when you run the vin and can't see it. Other wise I like to leave well enough alone.

This is a tricky combination at best. In another post I asked about rolling over the cat and making a doctor visit with the tourch and gutting it and sewing her back up all nice and pretty. I have not gotten any reply on that one yet...Denny

23,000 miles on a car that will never be a collectable????? might as well start hacking and adding a v8 to it already.

Well I don't know if I should love you or hate you for that comment! BUT you are right. I got the car from an auction where the owner had died and the kids sold everything off. I got a good deal and it is so pretty (can I say pretty) that I feel it holds some value as is.

The car is for my daughter who is now in drivers training and should be driving in about 6 months. I guess I will leave well enough alone after I finish putting in the kick-butt sound system I'm doing now. I was told that the stock sound system had to go by her and my wife who loves to keep her foot firmly planted in the floor board (better there than my a%#).

Thank for all your help...Stock 173 forever...

Sounds like it has just the right amount of power for the intended driver.

In a year or so, you could consider swapping in a 3.4l V6. Not sure that meets your "not a lot of money" criteria, though. But, it should be less than the typical V8 swap (certainly less from the hassle standpoint).

Not much you can do to adjust the ol' Rochester E2SE...I should know; I've had 2 different Camaros with them.

Camaro #1- 1983 w/ a 1982 V6 (long story about previous owner
replacing the blown 4-cyl) rebuilt that carb four
times before I cracked the float bowl. Used a spare
to build it all over again. That engine sucked, nothing
helped it.

Camaro#2- 1984 with original motor and trans (yay). Had to
rebuild it last fall because the mixture control
solenoid fell apart inside. This one runs good.
Not fast, but good.

These particular carburetors are extremely temperamental. The only way you could squeeze more power out of them would be to remove the mixture screw plug and turn the screw to re-adjust the mixture for a little more fuel. It works, but it kills gas mileage, roughens the idle, and the power you gain is so minimal that you'd barely notice it.

You could try swapping the intake and get a 4BBL carb, but gas mileage is going to suck and you're going to blow that 2.8's guts out, no matter how few miles are on it. These motors are definitely not known for their high performance. Great for daily driving and people like me with too many speeding tickets....but lousy if you want neck-snapping performance.

Fuel injected motors are better for performance. Seem more durable too....that is, if they start in the winter time....seems to be some kind of 2.8 no-start virus going around here lately...
